Melbourne is probably the realistic one. Either way itd be nice to beat a couple of top 8 teams
If we play like we have this past month, I have beating the Eagles. All remaining games are 50/50 propositions.
If we manage to recapture the form shown against GWS, we’ll knock off the Eagles, Crows, Saints, Suns, and Dockers.
I don’t give us a chance against the Cats, Pies, Dees, Swans or Lions irrespective of form.
Melbourne are nothing special and dont have the wood over us, haven’t had a drubbing against them in decades.
Geelong on the other hand it’s close your eyes and pray

2 against the then top 8 teams. We beat the Doggies when they were 8th and we were outside the 8. They may not be in the 8 now but they were when we played them.

We haven’t played 2 of the current top 8 teams. You also cannot discount who we beat and where they were to drive a point. At the end of the year some of those in the 8 won’t be there and some who are not there will be.

If we extend to the current top 11 teams of the ladder. In our 7 games against them, we have gone 2-1-4 averaging 79 points for and 92 points against
Pity he only gets the footy about 6 times a game.

If we play like we played last night, we will win a lot of games. Pretty unlucky for us to have a poor accuracy game coupled with a Bloos above average accuracy game.

In pure ladder terms, right now we’re far ahead of where I would have expected. If port and freo win their 13th game and we move down to 5th, still ahead but less so. In terms of form, we’ve only been disastrously bad once this year, which is good by our standards, and pretty good by league wide standards this year. We’ve mostly produced decent form, which has mostly got us wins against middling sides, and been lucky that our less than good form has been enough to squeak across the line against a couple of bad teams. Even if they’re not exactly a force so far this year, beating the dogs is a valuable win for Essendon. The win against the giants was good to go into a game with a bit of hype and deliver.
Our selections have been more conservative short term focused than long term or experimental (not exclusively, but largely) so I think the coaches have invited high expectations, not necessarily of winning every week, but of consistent and dependable effort.
I said it somewhere else earlier in the season, but the only way Essendon can prove to me that they can play a full year of consistent (decent or better) football is to play a full year of consistent football. We’re at the halfway mark, and despite a wobbly last month, we could still more or less do it. Whether or not we will, well, that wouldn’t be a review.
