2025 draft spec

We’re only half way through the season so there’s plenty of time for things to change yet.

Lindsay is one of my favourite fits for our list.

Everyone right now is talking about how ball movement is the most important thing in the game, and while I love to be a contrarian in this case I just think they’re right. I’m not sure you can have enough elite users of the footy, especially in the back half of the ground. I think our lack of that has been why Brad’s been experimenting with Martin and Merrett back there. Reid is brilliant when he’s fit. Zak Johnson might be the future, but you can never have too much of those medium sized guys with good athletic profiles, elite skills by foot and composure with the ball. I’m not sure how high up I would reach to take Lindsay right now… would I pick him ahead of CDT, Duursma or Sharp? I don’t have him ranked above those guys yet, but maybe I would pick him ahead of them specifically for our list needs, I’d have to think about it more deeply.

I still have Greeves ahead of Duursma and Sharp at number 2 as it stands. But I still think we’re going to have to decide what’s happening with Tsatas and Hobbs before we dip back in to draft another midfielder with a top end pick. If we’re shipping them out then I’d love to target Ollie Greeves, I think he’s an elite prospect with his combination of size, agility and burst.

If we still see Tsatas as the future, I love Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves. Unique prospect in many ways. Sort of like Caleb Windsor but with the ability to go forward and turn into medium sized marking target and super dangerous goal kicker. The fact that he just keeps on stepping up in big moments and inspiring his team to come from behind wins I rate super highly. We haven’t had an on field inspirational figure like that in a long time. Who knows if NHH can do that at AFL level but I’d be keen to find out.

I can’t see NHH lasting to us but if he does he is the one we need to prioritise.

I can just see him going into the midfield after the champs and he will flourish, if he dominates he will enter pick 1 talks given the lack of a standout pick and the aversion to taking ruckman high.

Plus I think the outside-inside midfield will be the vogue player after the season is done imo, there are just too many examples of this type performing well at the moment to ignore.

Daicos, Dawson, Nick Martin, McCluggage, Smith, Holmes, Rankine, Warner, Richards, Day, Gulden are all going to poll well in the Brownlow over the next few years and all of them are outside types of various flavours who have gone inside and play elite transition footy on the spread and are making a big difference to how the game is played.

I would love a draft of all three of those players.

Move on Hobbs and Tsatas, get a first round for Draper.

Draft

Lindsay
Greeves
NHH

It would allow us to actually play someone who can play the half forward role, replace the accumulator in Tsatas with a bustling impact mid and instantly improve our ball movement with a laser kick and leader added to our backline.

We were also short on rucks

Unless your picking up Michael Hurley or Dustin Fletcher or Marty Gleeson  in the MSD, your not getting AFL experience down back from a MSD pick.

We were heavily into RAMM - and likely expected May to be gone.
from a list perspective it probably worked out best for long term, not short term.
Blakiston went ok when trialled ind efence in VFL - and Cats forward Neale is huge so maked sense to me.

We didn’t expet Ben McKay to be injured for an extended period is also what it likely comes down to.

We’ll get Hussien El Achkar with our 2nd rounder (most likely). He’s a small forward.

@noobermensch do you think Swied’s quiet game in the VFL dropped his expected draft range a bit? Or was this expected?

If we and Melbourne can tank properly, Oscar Allen is injured, then it is not impossible we end up with picks 4 and 5.

Assuming for the sake of argument that CDT, Duursma and Sharp get taken first then we would have our picks for 2 of the following: Lindsay, NHH, Greaves and Grlj. That’s a good position to be in. Everyone talks about the perceived weakness of the draft without actually looking at what it means in detail.

Honestly CB, if you look over my messages I’ve never been in the “Sweid is a top 20 pick” camp. As much as I’m a Cal Twomey fan I feel like he’s been doing more pure unjustified hype of club linked players this year and setting unrealistic expectations for fan bases. For me it was more or less expected, the slightly larger disappointment was his performance in the Champs against SA but that was a dirty day for Metro as a whole and he has a chance to rectify that over the next three games.

I haven’t moved him much, I still expect him to attract a bid somewhere though the middle rounds, but he could slide a bit into more of the back end of the draft. Lets wait and see how he closes things out.

Nairn went big in a dominant Champs performance booting 7 goals for SA against a WA team that simply couldn’t handle him on the day. He was powerful and clean in the air and solid at ground level and could easily have had 9 goals if he hadn’t been robbed of a couple by dubious umpiring decisions.

Yep need to wait and see, a lot more will be taken from state league and champs games than early Coates league matches. Plus like Gulden he has his height as a midfielder working against him, needs to be super good just to get drafted.

@noobermensch I’m not sure about the watermark, but first things first you need a better youtube handle. Footy Stuff comes across as really amatuerish and lazy (no offence intended) and doesn’t shout subscribe to me. I’d suggest something like ‘Draft Prospects’ or ‘Draft Guru’ or something catchy that isn’t taken, that tells you what the channel is about specifically.

You could be right, but footy stuff has developed a following and people search for my channel. I will probably change it at some point but there are always risks to making a name change.

Given he’s currently injured, seemingly off-radar a bit and now out of the top 20 rankings on sites, how is Phillipou Mkii for kicking skills?

Also, I tend to ignore the whole academy linked thing in terms of people saying " yeah, it’s pick 6 but it might be pick 12 after academy / fs bids. It’s still the 6th best pick of all actually available players.

Clubs need to start making the linked clubs pay the real value , that’s the real story here. Nick Daicos and the Ashcroft boys not draining Collingwood and Brisbane of pick 1 points value is the big story.

What we do know is that North will not take another midfielder. You can guarantee that.

They don’t have a first rounder anyway

West Coast will take Sharp at 1 IMO

I reckon you’re probably right. It could be a huge draft for them if they pick Sharp and then try and pick off the cream of the WA crop by trading back in to a couple of mid to late first rounders.

It was a tough day for WA but Fred put together a strong performance to be their best on the day. He worked hard all game and found plenty of the footy in space where he was able to damage with his disposal, although his midfield group was soundly beaten by the WA mids overall. His ability to place his kicks to a dangerous spot inside 50 or float them perfectly to the advantage shoulder of his target is elite.
