Take the inspirational young half backs over the last couple of seasons. They rebound and they run very fast. We are talking Jiath. Thats the in demand type, not Roberts types, notwithstanding Archie has a tank.
But theres also the “upside” calculation. Man child players, who might have peaked OK at 17, , but peaked early and are not a top 5 pick, how often have we seen these players fail to become locks at AFL level. I think they might slide.
What is going to be his biggest area of improvement? There must be a reason why we was overlooked till pick 54. This bloke holds the biggest fascination for me.
Lordo said that when he first saw him, he played like Selwood in the way he went for the ball in the midfield, but then as years went by he moved into half back position and played there.
(Whilst he didn’t say this word to word, that is what he was trying to imply).
“The hard-working running half back credits Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd and Pies champion Scott Pendlebury as two figures who have played a key part in his development both on and off the field.”
Pretty good development mentors right there. From a pre-draft article here
It won’t be as simple and straight forward as a cause and effect. There will be multiple factors. Blitzers looking at this selection slide as a negative, l prefer to see it as an astute pick, a bargain in waiting.
clubs go to drafts with plans. they may not even look at players because they either dont expect them to be there or already have that spot over filled. seeing a lot of clubs draft based on needs over talent this year means you got potentailly very good kids sliding to the 50s and not even getting drafted.
The ‘zero finals wins since 2004’ is a huge millstone to overcome for your head of recruiting, but the fallout from 2013 really cannot be underestimated.
Yep. He’s the fall guy but in truth it’s an organisation full of failures for 20 years, and quite a few on bigger coin than Adrian have made his life harder with their decision making then scooted scot free on to new boards and new enterprises. Good that we’re finally doing a proper refresh, but AD cops it too much.
