Nah, Myers looked like a player to build around, Rioli was a lot of potential. We would’ve ruined Cyril, we were lucky to get more than 30 games out of David. And Clakko had rebuild drafts consecutively just prior to expansion club compromised years. Rioli was cream

Needs a bit of explosiveness in his game from what I see…lacks a bit of urgency. Got some good strengths to work with.

Well, Myers actually was a big bodied mid. We cannot say Dodoro didn’t try to draft any.
Archie had a couple of HOF/megastar/champion players vouching for him. I hope he can handle the expectation arising from that.
Don’t know why people always mention Myers over Rioli. If you want to complain about the pick, you say we picked Myers over Dangerfield

I think people always say it because there was a lot of talk on here about picking him up. Mostly from having Dean at the club. If I remember correctly no one really thought he was going to be drafted top 10 and where more hoping he would slide to it next pick.

Dodoro said that Rioli had been “considered extremely seriously” but due to the recruitment of Leroy Jetta and Alwyn Davey it gave the Bombers belief they had the small forward position covered.
“David Myers, at that time, was one of the (most) highly-credentialed players in that draft. He was playing senior football for Perth Football Club, so here’s a bloke 17 years of age playing senior football in the WAFL,” he said.
“What happened with Cyril was in his top-age year he was injured and he played one very good game at Victoria Park – I think he kicked seven or eight goals for NT when he was playing on one leg when he was isolated. Other than that, a fairly quiet year due to injury,” he said.
"He actually did his AIS training with us. ‘Hirdy’ ran through him, broke his collarbone, he was obviously living with Dean Rioli at the time, so we certainly knew him.
"We actually thought he was going to get through to our second pick, if truth be known – and congratulations to Hawthorn, they picked him.
"But the other reason why we never select him was because it was absolutely crucial to bolster our midfield with a big-bodied mid and we had just brought into the club Leroy Jetta and Alwyn Davey, who were two indigenous small forwards as well. We thought that we had that end of the ground covered.

It’s lost to time but David Myers highlight video for his draft year was phenomenal, he looked to have it all as a rebound half back. Size/speed/agility and lethal long left boot.

few highlights in here, looks a bit like hodge off half back, much leaner and mobile than his AFL days.
