#21 Dyson "Go jam it” Heppell - goes alright

I remember the I first started taking the ■■■■ about him being incapable of being our captain whilst he had dreadlocks.
Of course it sounds ridiculous on the surface that a haircut could have even 0.1% of an influence on someone’s leadership abilities.
He’s been just as terrible an onfield leader without them

He’s just ahead of Marc Murphy

Murphy captained finals wins and actually led by example in his on field performance. He’s so far ahead of Hep it’s not funny…

‘Win’, singular isn’t it?

Would only be that one where they replaced us after we got booted out of finals and they went on and knocked off Richmond on the back of Nick Duigan playing the game of his life.

Would Clako or a replacement for Truck support any ott deal for Hep with the promise of the 2023 captaincy? Or would he rather pop him on a bus with his missus bound for Surfers Paradise next week?

I think I know the answer.

The issue with Goddard bellowing at players was he played the unaccountable loose halfback role in a bruise free fashion. Paul Chapman wasn’t much of a fan of him in his book, he would be a decent judge.

Pretty uncharitable recounting of Goddard there.

What he did was play in arguably the most defensively sound team of the modern era. A team that got to the GF twice and almost won them both (with Goddard trying to will them across the finish line with a ‘Norm Smith’-worthy performance in the 2010 GF in particular).

He was an elite ball-user. That’s probably why he was told to play half-back by coaches. Not because he was soft.

The guy played like he gave a ■■■■ and pushed others to do so as well. It’s a shame he came to a team that didn’t share those values and hasn’t since he left. Yeah, that kind of person is going to ■■■■ people off, but good leaders do that: challenge their teammates in setting a standard.

Merrett had that same attitude, but was told that he was too tough on other players.

I have said this before, players should not pick the captain, the coach should. Well the right coach should.

Yep-Paul Chapman pretty much said Goddard was willing to dish out advice but sulked when it came back the other way.

It pains me to say it, but he has done himself no favours in the last couple of games. I would not offer him 2 years, and, if they lowballed him enough for him to leave, I would understand. I have a high regard for Hep, and I think he has been unfairly hammered on quite a few occasions on here, but, like Truck, I’m struggling to see the light

This guy makes Marc Murphy look like Joel Selwood

If they get the administration (and potentially coaching) right by next season - we might already have a selwood on our hands in a kid that was dropped to medi-sub on the weekend.

there’s no way he gets another year with rutten and brasher gone imo

the broom is out

I think because of the huge changes likely he gets a year for some stability. No captaincy, no automatic pick in the seniors.

He has provided a lot of support to players over the years and is much liked.

As much as I’d like to nuke everyone, this is a mentally fragile group. They need some stability. He’s the least offensive and not going to impaxt a rebuild too much noting the above caveats.

agreed. Possibly Hurls stays for one year too.

God no, to both remaining.

New coach. New chapter. No saga baggage. Not negotiable.
