Of course they resent him. And i bet many are ■■■■■■ with Heppell and his type of captaincy. Hurley being around the club is doing nobody any good either. Drop Shiel, take the captaincy off Heppell and retire Hurley immediately.

I realized today that I’ve actually gone through the five stages of grief for the footy club and type of footy I grew up with. I’m actually at the point of acceptance and it’s a relief.
In some way Hep is right about his authenticity and character and being a role model for kids to enjoy their sport. If so it means we ignore real problems and divert our emotion on to what at base level is recreation turned into business. That’s no real revelation. And in any case it’s not going to change. But he seems to have positivity that borders on delusion. He’s one of those guys you think, god you’ve been raised well.
What he doesn’t seem to realise is a lot of people put their hard earned so that he in turn is paid a lot of money to lead a large institution. It’s not park footy Hepp. Those people who turn up to games aren’t coming to watch you get paid to have fun. Their investment in what your doing costs them - we’re not all as fortunate to have the positivity and good fortune you’ve had.
Showing kids to fight hard for success is also a lesson. Enjoyment through hard work and success is also a thing. Being authentic is also expressed through having resilience and resolve - setting non negotiables and being ■■■■■■ off when you or others let yourselves or others down. Kids also grow up and learn the world is often a ■■■■ place. A baseline of positivity is important, but if there’s no resilience and goals there’s nothing to work toward or resolve to overcome hard times and adversity - in a word loss.
He’s been given a pretty bad hand in many ways by the club, but he’s maintained his positivity. So far as the interview goes I’m sort of glad he dropped the f bomb - it means something got through the facade.

From the outside in I kind of agree with you.
But I think Hurley and Hepp must see the writing on the wall themselves perhaps after a chat. Hard to see Hurley coming back and Heppell surely knows he ain’t the same player.
Heppell wants to be a role model to kids. What he is failing to realise, is that his soft approach to leadership is bringing Essendon down, and in turn, thousands of young Essendon followers are bored and miserable, and will turn to another sport or another team.

I kinda left that interview pretty convinced he actually isnt that good of leader, to be honest. He really makes it hard to make you think that his messaging gets through. does he care? you bet. but im struggling to take anything he says seriously
wouldn’t being a good leader involve changing your leadership style and being adaptive to certain situations? because he seems very “my way or the highway” and im not sure that’s doing him any favours

That interview will go down in history as a lesson of what a captain should NOT do.
As to the suggestion that he ‘hadnt seen’ the footage… that is even worse. Cornes is right (ughh) that would mean that the captain then wouldn’t have spoken to Shiel about it… and no matter what you think of Shiel… how farked would that be… you are getting called out on footy media… a dude absolutely belittling you on national telly is being played on repeat and your captain doesn’t even give you a call to check in?!!
So our media team thought it would be best for Dyson to LIE (ummm) and also make it look like he hadn’t followed up?!! WTAF… are we that stupid?
As to the “what do you want him to say” crowd… how about some honesty. We played ■■■■, we clearly haven’t nailed the game plan… we are not standing for anything right now but we are going to change that. The boys clearly didn’t handle the heat well… including the Shiel incident but we have spoken as a group and it won’t happen again. This club stands for more than what we are producing and yes it is just empty words but I believe we can turn it around.
Anything would have been better than what he dished up. It really was a carwreck interview.

Wouldn’t surprise me if Hep had seen it on the field and didn’t do anything, he has form in that area.
I still remember the footage of 2 Melbourne players mauling Goddard on the ground, and in the background you see Hep jogging back into position, never even looking to help Goddard out
Watch anytime there is any kind of scuffle, Hep just comes in and tries to break it up. You never see him actually in there sticking up for his teammates

Might have been first vision he saw of it ( which I doubt as it was on the big screen live at the SCG ), but positive he heard about Parker post game nothing surer!!!
Was heppell one of the ones that ran the opposite way when Merrett got knocked out a few years back? Do you know the one I’m talking about… it made news at the time… basically Merrett was KO and not one bomber checked on him or remonstrated.

I don’t think it would have been an easy interview to take for any of the other captains in the League.
I don’t think Ziebell or Shuey would have done much of a better job. Leading two clubs as pathetic as we are right now.
That Sydney loss on the weekend was some kind of smashing.
To think a 10 goal loss was actually flattering is saying something.
Yep, we’re losing a large chunk of a generation of supporters. And part of that is the clubs focus on being a successful business, which is mortgaging future success. That’s not Heppell’s fault - it’s the culture from top to bottom.

Only thing with the Eagles is they are not delusional like our management, and know exactly where their at. They are not shying away, and are putting on the record that they are going to gut the place and do whatever is required.
Eagles are at start of their rebuild Essendon has been turning over the list for a few years

We have gutted the place. I do think we also have a few key injuries in good smaller players and too many project talls.
So hence no depth where its needed this year.
Poor list management. I’m not sure why we needed both Brand and Eyre as well as recruiting Reid and Cox.
Also consider Wright, Jones(perennially injured) Stewart. A lot of tall timber with only Wright winning games at one end.
I can get one because we are holding onto Hurley instead of paying him out.
(Really we need his spot and maybe another for picks in the mid season draft)
This idea that Hep is somehow personally responsible for how ■■■■■ we are is absolutely mental. It’s not his fault that he is clearly the best candidate for the job. We have a leadership vacuum due to the quality of our playing list. The issue is that we don’t have anyone better. Not Hep’s fault.
