Carlisle is younger and therefore worth more. Ryder may have been contracted but had extenuating circumstances making getting a higher value tough. Pick 5 is fair and reasonable.
They have to get nine to offer it, and I can’t see any clubs dealing just to help the saints.
Why would any club give them 9 and 13, it is the equivalent of about pick 2, and given the ■■■ drops out of the draft no club will drop 9 and 13 for 5 and maybe a pick they not fussed to use in the late 30s
Saints are going to waste everybodies time for two weeks then call in the AFL saying we are unreasonable and then begrudgingly hand over 5. All the media specialist will complain that we hijacked the trade period again by not accepting a third rounder so it’s easy for every other club.
I honestly think unless there is a fair deal in the table flogging him to another club and/or sending him to the PSD is a good option.
Firstly, looks like Aish might be in the mix for the PSD. He won’t stay at the lions GCS won’t take him as he wants out of QLD, Carlton will take Jake so we could basically swap Carlisle for Aish. Worst case we take Jake at PSD pick 4 and make him play VFL CHB for the year and then play the dance again. It’s only money!
The saints have to deal and we have to be firm.
If it’s not pick 5 then I want a higher value picks than 5 like 9 and 13. Dodoro should hit the radio tomorrow firming our position. Worsfold should do the same.

As it stands though yes we took pick 17 or whatever and lucked onto langford who we hope develops into the player we hope/see/think he can be.
But what if we could of had pick 6 and 17 (random number for arguments sake), surely that’d be better wouldn’t it ?
We also know that now, a year on a team is gonna use the fact we settled for 17 for ryder as a basis to try and screw us over with Another player leaving the club.
Granted they may well have done it anyway, but if push comes to shove and 2 and a half weeks in and the Saints still aren’t offering pick 5, who do you think will fold or blink first ?

There’s no way he would go past pick 1, actually. Why would you recruit an unproven tall with years in development to go, over Carlisle?
The annoying thing is we would have received better compensation if they were free agents. Plus could have negotiated better deal if had draft picks ie with crameri deal.

How is this for a fairer system than the PSD?
Have just the one ND and for established players already on lists who are walking, let other teams select them directly against the new draftees and the side who selects them gives the draft pick they use to the side losing the experienced player to use in the draft immediately that occurs, and either get rid of rookies and lengthen the main list or just put rookie picks directly after the main picks are exhausted.

It’s easier than that. Just ask how many players on their current list have been guaranteed $700k over 5 years. Answer = none. Simple. On what they are offering I’d say only St Nick would be on more dollars.
