I suspect that he puts on the slightly goofy country boy nice bloke face for the media, but i saw him do qtr time addresses etc when he captained Gippsland. The bloke does not lack drive.

Leadership goes beyond addressing players. It selection, accountability, on field presence. I’m not saying he’s a bad leader, I’m saying he’s not the right leader.

I think i’d still far prefer Heppell captain than anyone on our list. The Adelaide game last year when he hobbled around on one foot the entire match but still put us on his shoulders in the last qtr and damn near won it singlehandedly is a prime example. He’s done that sort of thing many, many times and people forget about it cos he lopes around with a goofy haircut and looks like out for a casual stroll the whole time.

Believe it or not, I have 40 staff who are performing far better than our team. I’ll have a laugh with my staff, but I’ll also rip into them is they stuff up. I’m employed to do a job and if that job is not done properly, I take it personally.
When was the last time he came out and said, “That was not good enough”? I just can’t see that in his nature.

I think alot of people still see him as the happy-go-lucky, laid back Kid we drafted.
Even though he still has that, but from what I have seen in Media interviews… he isn’t afraid to eye-ball journalists and be very assertive.
I’m sure he can quickly switch from good-bloke, to hard ar*se at the flip of a switch. Because I’m exactly the same.
And to sum it all up… we honestly have no one else that’s as good a leader imo.
When was the last time a senior player was omitted? Not ‘Managed’ but omitted? There is no accountability by any of Essendon’s leadership. Hasn’t been for years!
I don’t disagree that we have no one better.

Do you really think Bellchambers wasn’t told he was being omitted this year when Draper came in? Do you think he didn’t know it full well? Just cos it doesn’t say “omitted” in that weekly email that the club sends out when they announce the team doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, or isn’t made very clear behind closed doors.
And the captain doesn’t pick the side, of course, so I’ve got no idea why you think this is some sort of mark against Heppell.

Should’ve cut his hair off years ago, therefore he is a not good leader.

I think he hasn’t had a heap of support from the other would be leaders in the team. Which was arguably Myers greatest asset
I’d love to see McGrath really step up and give Heppell a genuine vice captain.

The club seems to value keeping criticism in-house. If that is coming from the Board and CEO, the Captain definitely won’t be criticising players publicly.
Even MRP and Umpiring. Everything is behind closed doors. Nothing Brought out in the media other than “we‘ve asked for clarification”.
It’s all part of being a liked and respected club!

Soooo… this Harrison Jones kid was a fan. I wonder what he thinks of all this mess and if Hepp is a good leader or not.
