I thought this was a joke. I had no idea he was actually Michael’s son. I guess not being FS eligible made it less important but I’ve just never heard it mentioned.
It looks like he potentially fills the Kelly/Hepp holes on the back line so hopefully he steps up & allows us to release Martin.
At this stage of our list build, we don’t need Kelly type players getting game time. We need more skillful, strong, attacking defenders. We can bring in the lock down defender when we are in contention for top 4.
Could say the same about Sam Collins, Keayes, Lyons, Membrey, Mason Wood, Stengle, Mitch Hinge (I like him). Some past ones: Peter Bell, Craig Bolton, Menegola, Luke Ball, De Boer, Brent Guerra.
A few that were closer to home for us Bachar, James Kelly, McPhee, John Barnes.
There’s been some diamonds turned over. And even if they don’t become so lucky, I’d settle for a ruby or sapphire like Mitch Brown.
I’d say a combination of things. Brisbane delisted him (so he effectively becomes a free agent), he may not have wanted to go anywhere other than us (unlikely but possible) and the depth of the draft made other clubs less interested in picking up fringe players.
A player who can’t crack into a premiership side is better than a player from a bottom 4 club who can’t crack into a side… not always the case but hes a upgrade on Hepp
At the worst he joins an increasingly solid VFL team and adds decent depth to the list. He might be preferred early in the season, or may be required if we are rocked by some injuries in the depths of winter. Hopefully he proves to be talented enough to be retained in the AFL.
