Jaxon Prior is a very good footballer playing in the best team in the league with an abundance of very good players playing his positions. He has played some excellent football in both forward and back lines and would have been a regular in almost every other AFL side. He’s delisted because Brisbane had to balance their list, not because he’s not AFL quality. We are very fortunate to get him and could easily replace Kelly or Heppell on the Half Back line. It likely pressure Martin into the wing which is a win-win situation and puts pressure on el-Hawli who in turn puts pressure on Guelfi, Gresham and Perkins. And that’s a good thing for the team.

This guy is a much more serious player than Cutler, shows some courage in the air and some polish with the ball.

Good size, can easily see him starting rd 1 alongside SEH, Redman and McGrath. It will make for a much much more attacking backline. Especially if Ridley and Reid can get up and going with their disposal.

Prior and Seh coming off half back compared to hepp and Kelly in rd one last year…

After looking at the highlights, I still see him the same as before.
He’s an average player. In an experienced team that have good repetitive behaviours on match day, you get to see the best of him and his weaknesses are relatively minimised.
Stick him in a lesser team that’s still trying to get to that level of consistency and I don’t see him lifting the team to new heights. Moreso he gets brought down a peg or two as his weaknesses are exposed more often and the best of him is a lower range.

It’s sort of like the Blumfield / Heffernan complex of our 2000 team. In a well oiled machine, they do their job and do it very well. Stick them in a lesser team and they get exposed. Then when they came back to us after their stint, they were nowhere near previous levels when we actually needed them to improve on those levels.

We might thread the needle and get a player who revives their career and becomes very good for the next 5 years. But I think this is more likely a 1 year bounce before being overtaken by younger players. A good example of this would be Will Brodie or Will Setterfield.

Best of luck to him though.

If nothing else he’s an upgrade on Kelly and hepp with ball in hand but I be just as happy if a draftee or Roberts simply demand the spot

Worth a shot, we could use another small defender, one who can lock down if required. One of the pleasing things from this years trade periord is we did not go after other clubs discards. We only brought in Prior who is one who fills a need for us and has a bit of talent. A real positive from Rosa.

If you looking at the back 6, most probabl;y had earmarked Roberts back there, he played wing/half back last year, and will have another preseason

b: McGrath McKay Reid
hb: Redman Ridley Roberts
bench: Prior

image

last year we had Laverde and Heppell in the backline and Roberts as 7th defender on bench

you probably say
Reid replaces Laverde
Prior replaces Heppell
Ridley Replaces Martin who moves to the Wing

I also had El-Hawli a chance for HBF spot. will be interesting where he is trained up over the summer - half forward, Wing or half back.
I would probably pick El-Hawli over Prior& Roberts but not sure Brad would given lack of AFL Experience. But maybe El-Hawli best suited to Half forward or utility role off the bench or the 7th defender.

Prior gave Roberts a big wrap in an interview today

Yep, we should wait until he has some AFL experience before we play him in the AFL

Watching highlights of his kicking, could be a serious weapon for us across HB. We lack someone who can kick it 60+ from there and turn defence into offence from one kick. I’m heartened that all the new recruits we have seem to have good disposal as a common trait. The anti-Dodoro!

If he can at least move it on, quicker than Kelly did, that has to be a plus.
