here’s an idea out of left field:

give him a 9 month contract. He mentors the guys through pre-season, plays the first half of the year as a chest-beating on-field coach, then steps aside gracefully while the kids make a run for the finals.

we then fill his spot with a hard nut from the mid-season draft.

Why would we be so keen to make him a coach.

He probably got paid 6-7 million at least in his career, there is a soft cap and this is not a charity.

I dont mean to sound harsh, but all this talk from people around “I’m okay with one more year as depth” etc is just plain silly. it’d be far more reasonable he retires knowing he got the most out of himself this year, rather than spending a year in the twos wasting a list spot

Middle of the season I was on the ‘give him another year’ train but as much as I love the guy to bits, it’s just time. We have young key players aplenty coming through, Hurls as potential grizzled key depth and we’ve just looked better balanced up there with the two key targets. Make no mistake, this saddens me every bit as much as not seeing Jobe get any club success. Would be nice if he stuck around this club he loves so dearly in some capacity but has every right to finally head home to his vineyards or something in WA footy.

The performance of Francis and in particular 2MP last match spelled out that the end is near for Cale. He has been a wonderful servant of the club, if he is to retire soon, l wish him nothing but good fortune for the rest of his days in whatever endeavour he chooses to pursue.
