At the end of 2015 who out of kavangh or jackson Merrett, will have the bigger impact?
Kavangh - huge talent, injury riddled few years and never completed a full pre season. Kav is gaining full fitness and building his core strength/with his inside game/ great vision and neat skills is a better combination of skills then Jacko Merrett. Hirdy will provide the opportunities if he performs through pre season and early VFL form will help his case.
J.Merrett - Running machine and all of his seasons have had a similar look, first half of his seasons start in glamouring fashion and then he has dropped off with form and consistency. I think Jacko is more likely to lineup against sydney in round 1 over Kav.
Can Merrett find the consistency at AFL level and use his strength (endurence) to run out games and punish teams late in games with impacting the score board. I think that will become his strength in the future. Is he ready to push Stanton and Howlett out of our best 22 or will he continue to struggle with consistency!
Kav performed tagging roles last in the VFL. Its deff not easy but its a way into the team and also a chance to learn from the best up close and personal.
i feel Kav weakness is he slow decison making.
strengths are is a great tackler and now his endurance, which are good atributes for a tagger.
i dont have Howlett Jerrett and Melk in my best 22 so I think Kav is behind them. gonna be hard for him
Howlett is a lock in Hirdys team no doubt - esp with Hocking and his injury setback - Howlett will perform our tagging roles
and everyone else in our midfield will play one on one against opposition mids.

I would pick Kav before J Merrett, J Merrett was stuffing up so much in 2014, I’m not keen on J Merrett at all.
I have more confidence in Kav being a better player.
Sorry all you J Merrett fans, I just don’t see it.
Gleeson ans Z Merrett on the other hand, fark yeah.
I’m not trying to turn this thread into a best 22 argument but it’s just going to be so hard for certain players like Kav to break into the team even if they are in top VFL form. If you look at something resembling the starting 22:
I’ve gone and highlighted the absolute locks and that’s even being ridiculously harsh on important members such as Myers and Stanton.
So that basically leaves 10 potential spots where a youngster could break in if his form was too good to refuse. Having Kav, J.Merret, Gleeson, Ashby, Obrien, Edwards, Stein, Dalgleish, Hams, Aylett, etc push super hard is massive because even if a Winderlich, Chapman or Fletcher is injured/rested, they still have to get past Dempsey, Melksham and a slightly underdone Hocking to get into the team. Might be a year where the youngsters just cannot get into the team despite top form, which can only be good for the team. But from a personal perspective, someone like Kav might regret leaving it till now to lift his training intensity.
I always thought NO’B has the running power and strength to be a tagger. Aylett similar to those attributes except probably tackles more (an advantage as a tagger).
KAV however better suited to being an outside mid/wingman who has great disposal efficiency and above avg speed. So like Fog said, wasted as a tagger, better to release him.
He’s probably not that far off, he’s been listed as an emergency fair bit and if his fitness has improved and his training has intensified and he showing maturity, he could easily get a call up.
I think we knew when we drafted him that he would have to get past his injuriy issues, plus he was pretty light to start with and was so going to take a while.
I’m not saying he will be a great player for us he’s been pretty patient and I think he would be able to see opportunities if not this year them next year. This year we have a few ring-ins as we have a serious crack at a flag and senior players will most likely get the nod more often than not expecially in finals.
I think next year with Fletch/Chappy/Licha gone there will be more opportunities for these guys (KAV & NOB etc) as positions are shuffled around a bit, especially if they can start tearing it up and showing good leadership in the VFL.
I think it would be crazy for them to leave for another club at the end of 2015.
Hopefully we have a scenario where some old timers leave, these guys step up and poople are asking “who are these guys, where did they come from, I thought EFC had to rebuild?”.
