#3 Darcy "Darcy Parish" Parish - Shiel can play forward pocket instead

Purple actually made a good point:

Imagine what the brownlow and rising star awards would look like if the list managers were voting…

What’s the point?

Is the new obsession with list managers? Why would they even have any more idea?

(And isn’t the idea he’s thinking about the coaches association award, or perhaps the MVP)

If you were an opposition coach the player from that group you’d midst be worried about taking the game off you is Fantasia.

He was basically saying that list managers understand the real value of players- ie would Peter Wright have received zero votes in the rising star if list mgrs were doing the voting? No, because they understand that there are 10 Callums for every Peter

Really depends what you’re trying to assess though. Performance and perceived value aren’t the same thing.

Wright might be valuable because of what he’ll bring in the future, but did he bring it this year. He showed glimpses that he would be very good into the future, but is that what the award is for?

It’s like Weitering, who has obviously had a good year (And better than Wright) and will be good into the future, but no doubt he received votes for the perceived value of being an intercept marking big man, all the while he was kept away from Daniher.

How would the list manager vote? And how different from the coaches or players or media? Everyone brings their own biases etc.

The entire problem with the award is that people try and make it out to be a predictor of who will be the best into the future, and those voting on it seem confused as to whether it’s a future award it a performance award. And there’s the constant arguments over whether it’s easier or harder to play x, y or z roles, and therefore how should the performance be assessed. Is 3 pack marks worth more than 20 outside possessions?

It’s subjective, and no one uses the same criteria as anyone else.

But it fills plenty of column inches discussing it, so that’s a success in the AFL’s eyes.

Convenient win, to keep pumping up Sydney, the original greenfield expansion club of the AFL, which after 34 years still needs every bit of “good news” and on field success it can get, to make any headway in an ARL dominated town. “Sydney boy changes from Rugby league to AFL and becomes a rising star.” Project an image of Buddy on the Harbour Bridge Pylon…all battles in the fight to win hearts and minds against the ARL fortress north of the border. No doubt Gil is chuffed at the outcome of the Rising star.

OR… he was just the best performed player eligible. I understand cynicism given the last few years we’ve endured but relax, not everything is a conspiracy. In the opinion of most people who are across most games each weekend Mills deserved to win.

Wait, wait.

Please tell me there aren’t people in here who think this competition is capable of anything that is not rigged or corrupt or per-determined?

Parish over Daniels

Rubbish

Yeah, not sure what he read into those stats…?

10 people voting 1-5 and Gil the only one who didn't give Parish any votes. Says it all.

Just more validation of our collective opinion of him. Wanker.

What I find staggering is the following:

Fantasia got 29 goals as a small forward in 19 games, when he only player in that position for maybe 10 of them in the team that finished bottom and for most of the year barely kicked 10 goals a match. Yet does not poll a single vote!

Parish averages over 20 touches a game and half of them contested, playing in the middle, in the bottom team. He only finished fourth! His stats would stack up well against all of the other previous midfield winners of this award.

Above and the omission of Zach Merrett from the 40 man AA squad tells me that this year for Essendon was never going to get any love from the so called media experts and judging panels.

I don’t really care about these awards because all that matters is premierships, and the three players listed above along with the other young players we have will form the basis of that next premiership side. I do find the exclusion amusing though.

Agree with what you say. If you look at the voting by person, Gillon was the only person out of 10 who did not give a vote to Darcy. Some gave as high as 3 out of a maximum of 5. Why am I not surprised at that.

Wtaf is the CEO of the comp doing voting in farking awards anyway. Just run the ■■■■■■■ game in the best interests of the game and stop with the whole celebrity wannabe bullshit.

Maybe it is the cynic in me, but gilligan is pushing this woman in football/woman’s football league all the way to an OAM, you farken watch. It sickens me.

No offense is meant by any of that to the woman who are actually trying their guts out to get on a list. Good on you, enjoy your football

Yes seeing much more of his face in front of the cameras these days which is disturbing on a number of fronts.

No doubt Mills is a good player and a worthy winner. I have said this before. Although you might infer “conspiracy theory” from my post, if you read it carefully, I am saying its convenient and Gil would be chuffed. I will say this though, I find it strange that Gil was unable to give one vote to Darcy even though 9 others gave him up to 3 votes. You can read what ever you like into that one.

So, how much is Gill paying you?

How do you rig it so that Mills has such a good rookie year ? It’s got me stumped.

In spite of being the preferred #5 pick amongst many Blitzers, Oliver won the Morrish last year then fell right out of Rising star contention and only managed 13 games at AFL level. Try and figure that one out as well.

The AFL Players’ Association MVP awards are on Tuesday, September 13. and the names of all the nominees have been released.

These awards include “Best First Year Player”

It is worthy to note that the AFL playing group decides the result from all the nominees. This probably will be a better indication than the Rising star of who is the best 1st year player out of the nominees .

Final Table of Nominees ( AFL Player rating after round 23 )

SYDNEY Callum Mills (186.8)
ESSENDON Darcy Parish (184.1)
CARLTON: Jacob Weitering (179)
ST KILDA Jade Gresham (168.9)
RICHMOND Daniel Rioli (136.1)
GOLD COAST ; Callum Ah Chee (130.1)
COLLINGWOOD Josh Smith (128)
FREMANTLE Sam Collins (117)
GEELONG Tom Ruggles (106.2)
WESTERN BULLDOGS Marcus Adams ( 105.4 )
MELBOURNE Josh Wagner (103.5)
BRISBANE Josh Schache (90.9)
GWS Jacob Hopper (73.1)
ADELAIDE Wayne Milera (65.4)
NORTH MELBOURNE Ryan Clarke ( 38.1 )
HAWTHORN Kade Stewart (33.1)
PORT ADELAIDE Riley Bonner (7.6)
WEST COAST EAGLES Tom Cole ( 6.2)

Interesting that Oliver (130) was not nominated by the Melbourne playing group, maybe because Oliver got a rising star nomination.

Port appear to have only given 2 games in total, one each to 2 first year players.
Essendon was able to debut a total of 5 first year players ( incl Tippa) for a combined total of 48 games.

What do you think the academies are for?

Do you have high hopes for Francis even though he only played a few games at AFL level?

Whilst different players, Oliver didn’t play the full season at AFL level for the same reason; his aerobic capacity wasn’t allowing him to run out games and his time on ground had to be managed incredibly.

Players mature at different rates. Oliver showed to all that he has the raw materials to be an absolute gun. He is fearless inside the contest, strong, can burst out of a stoppage and he has the added dimension of being a good overhead mark.

The fact that he doesn’t have the athletic profile to permit him to play out full games and to back up properly meant that he was no chance to win the rising star but MFC will be deservedly excited with what he can become provided they have actually turned the corner with their player development.

This award is not about forecasting how good they will be, just how they played in their first season. Rhys Palmer winning vs Danger and Rioli etc.
