#33 Alwyn Davey Jnr

Needs a summer of wrestling.

When you notice how Adelaide were using Menzie’s opponent / area as a way to easily transition out of defence, you realise how badly we need Davey in the team. He wasn’t big on possessions, but at least he would apply some pressure on the way out. I know this will be controversial (and correlation doesn’t equal causation) but I think he was more important to our earlier season form than people realise.

A couple of points.

  1. We virtually played a team of 16 last night, as Goldy was even worse than Menzie.
  2. ADJ as weak as he is, is still better at this stage than Menzie. Time to change back.

  1. The best forward lines have multiple small forwards as points of attack, not just one. Kako is going to need a playmate in 2025. Nominations are now open.

We certainly need a small forward combo, whether Davey is the answer I don’t know. He’s got a big preseason ahead.

I’m picking neither.

Play one short? That is a Baldrick worthy plan.

No you wouldn’t.

Why, I’d go Hind and Guelfi.

Our forward line functions better when a player of his archetype is in it. I’m not bothered which brother, but one of them has to play.

Those weren’t the two options, it was a hypothetical choice between Davey and Menzie. You choose a third option. It’s like a choice between your two brothers and you choose the hot model.

I always choose the hot model, always.

The kid is in his second year, he hasn’t even had the chance to develop a physique to handle AFL.

He has elite traits and with proper development and coaching could become a gifted half forward or at the very least a good contributer.

You are all so impatient.

Davey stands more a chance of developing his physicality than Menzie has of developing his speed enough to be able to apply pressure and perceived pressure

I’m not so optimistic. Looking at their statistical profiles, neither Davey Jr nor Menzie have exhibited performance in any significant respect. Although it could be argued that Menzie’s 23 goal return last year would put him in the elite bracket for players his age that season. To the naked eye, neither player exhibits elite physical traits in terms of strength, power, speed or endurance, including for small forwards in their age bracket. And remember, less patience is typically afforded to shorter players in terms of physical development as it’s comparatively easier for them compared to talls.

how do you figure that?

menzie isnt exactly slow, hes certainly not quick. This can be improved through training.

Davey is as soft as butter. It would require a complete reversal in mindset.

Unfortunately Menzie is bog slow between the ears, something quite genetic I suspect and like leopard with its spots.

Come on, you can’t sit there and tell me Davey doesn’t have elite speed. When he’s out on the field he’s easily top 5 for both teams. And you only have to look at the goal he scored against GWS where he turned his opponent inside out to see he has incredible agility.

I don’t think he’s a natural goal sneak, but I do see a very raw but yet exciting player, who just needs some time in the gym and a bit of confidence that he can mix it with the best.

For the position he plays, deep small defensive forward I don’t think he is particularly quick. Probably a little quicker than average. If pace is his one wood he needs to be quicker. He does have good skills though, when he gets space.

To my eye, it’s not just about speed, but also evasiveness and unpredictability.
Take for example someone like Hind, to my eye he runs pretty straight and is predictable. As he ages he will slow somewhat and become even more limited.

AD and JD can continue to evolve.
