#40 - Zak Johnson

Johnson has no hope after Roberts who was clearly the second best player in the Rising Star award only got fifth place.

rising star or brownlow? i couldn’t find a bet for the brownlow but figured it was system glitch

Unless you’re flashy and really stand out, you don’t get noticed… that how the AFL world works

Gotta be a high draft pick to win the rising star award. It’s how McGrath won it over Powell pepper somehow who was amazing in his first year playing as an inside mid against fully grown men.

Ryan Burton (who was picked after Powell Pepper) also finished above him.

Ollie Dempsey was a rookie pick.

Granted, Sam Darcy and Harley Reid were ineligible.

How many pick 1s have actually won it? Maybe 6?

Clearly it’s more than just that. It certainly doesn’t hurt.

Most have been first round picks.

But equally, you would kind of expect when judging performances of early career players, the better ones are going to be higher picks. The draft isn’t random.

TBF Powell-Pepper was also a fully grown man at that stage.

Actually I think Burton also had a better first year than McGrath. I think it might be a case of if the higher pick/more well known player has a good year, they’ll go with them over a low profile pick that has a slightly better year.

I don’t think there is much science to the rising star, a lot also would depend on what games the selectors see and we’re front and centre on TV the most. So pick 1 on primetime all the time has a significant advantage over say Powell pepper playing in Adelaide on Sunday afternoon for Port power.

You think the Bombers coming off 3 wins & dead last were higher billed than the Hawks, coming off top 4, and 2 years after a premiership?

That’s certainly… an opinion.

Also the thing that really does count against Powell Pepper is that he’s not very good at football.

$67 on Sportsbet now!

Essendon consistently draws strong ratings, which is why we’re regularly scheduled in prime time. People complained about it last year, even though we were coming off a bottom-six finish. Yet we were still given plenty of marquee slots, including several in the floating fixture, despite our form not being particularly convincing early on.

As for Powell-Pepper, his debut season was outstanding, comparable to when Palmer won the Rising Star at Fremantle, but his output tapered off after that too. That year, we were looked after in terms of Rising Star and All-Australian selections. Coming off the supplements saga bans, the AFL seemed to embrace the redemption narrative around the club, even though our actual on-field performance didn’t necessarily justify that level of recognition.

I want to be successful again just so we don’t play on Sundays.

He actually lead in every stat comfortably last year to sny other rising star nominee and still wasnt rated a top 5. Losers who vote for it unfortunately

No, he wasn’t.

I had Dan Curtin, Harvey Langford, and Murphy Reid as clearly above him. Levi Ashcroft being a best 23 mid in a premiership powerhouse midfield was always going to add points.

That isn’t having a go at Archie, either. Those three are all looking like they’ll be superstars.

I told you all we should have picked up Murphy Reid. No one in this place ever listens to me.

And passed on Kako?

We didn’t have a play at him after trading our picks.
