Well it’s better he match-up on McCreery than DeGoey!
Let’s assume Redman misses, what are your matchup for:
DeGoey
Hill
Elliott
McCreery
Hoskin-Elliott
McKay, Reid and Ridley will have some combo of Mihocek, McStay and Cox. Our only other defenders are Roberts, McGrath and Prior. We would definitely be a defender short.
DeGoey - redman/seh
Hill - mcgrath
Elliott - prior
McCreery - roberts
Hoskin-Elliott - roberts (i assum hoskin elliot is playing a bit of wing / half back at the moment too.
I actually think he would make a good sub can play forward back or wing and is quick could inject some speed into the game late and good option for a kid without a full tank yet
They have 3 tall forwards max. 2 more often than not. So that leaves three of those players in the forward line minimum and more often than not four of them. So the surplus in that group either rotate up to the wing or rotate through the centre bounce.
I’d say we’ll keep our three talls out there. And either Ridley or Reid will go to one of Hoskin-Elliott or McCreery. I doubt Collingwood play both in the forward line. Especially with DeGoey there.
They usually prefer more small forwards (Hill, Schultz and Elliott).
I think we’ll play McGrath, Redman, Prior and Roberts on their smalls and we’d have no problems Roberts following them up to the wings when they rotate through there.
If Redman isn’t playing, we’ll go to Martin. Yes, it is a bit of robbing Peter to pay Paul, but his role is to pretty much play more attacking but also be not too far away from where the footy is. And I’d be expecting the ball to be on our half back flank more often than our half forward flank. Martin can also roll up onto the wing when needed.
There is no way I’d be exposing Nguyen on any of those players on Anzac Day. The guy hasn’t even played back to back VFL games so you don’t know he handles that load let alone how to back up a VFL game with an AFL one.
Nguyen is coming from a long way behind. He is promising, but the plan with him would be to develop in the VFL. And show gradual consistent improvement across multiple weeks. If there is an opportunity, yeah, play him in seniors in the back half of the year and if he doesn’t take it well, send him back to VFL and see if he improves (compare how he goes after his AFL games vs before that game). If he improves then we have a player ready for a big pre-season and attack next year with confidence. If not, then he just needs more time.
Sorry mate what’s this mean? Are you saying it was Adrians call? What else did you expect him to say if that’s the case, he just took a top 5 pick. 'Look it wasn’t exactly my decision so we’ll see how it goes". I clearly remember at the time multiple interviews with brad and me thinking, yep it was his influence. I remember him going on about you don’t give up top 5 picks etc.
