Montgomerie is 23 so gets less time. Heās been injury free basically all year and hasnāt been close to selection (has he even been named as an emergency at any point?). Heās gone for sure
When he is fit, he is a top 5 small forward and one of the most damaging players in the game. They donāt grow on trees.
If Tom Papley did a knee in R24 this year, announced a desire to be at Essendon on a 3-4 year deal. You wouldnāt trade for him because he is a wasted list spot next year? Of course you do the deal.
For Tippa, age is a different factor to a Papley, but he is still capable of a two more years if he is fit enough.
If it doesnāt work out, itās not like we would have missed a top draft pick, it was Tippa or another supplemental list allocation, which we didnāt have any players we liked.
Again a really silly comparison and Iām not sure why there is a constant need to talk in hypotheticals with Tippas situation.
If papley was 30, unfit for a whole season and didnt play a single game, then retired citing lack of desire, got totally unfit during the offseason, then said he wanted to return being supremely unfit, then we took him back for a year and he struggled through several senior games while remaining unfit, there is no way I would let him stay.
If Tom Papley did a knee today and said he wanted to come to Essendon on a 3-4 year deal, he is currently the premier small forward in the comp and a supremely fit athlete who has shown an undying enthusiasm for the sport. To indulge your hypothetical, I would have him in a heartbeat.
However the two scenarios couldnt be further apart from one and other.
