Nah, I remember seeing Leroy in a Ressies game in pouring rain, and the typical mud heap - might have been Willy or Sandringham- one of those dumps - absolutely tear it apart in the guts in contests. Only one who could handle the bar of soap that day.
With DJR, was all between the ears.

Agreed. And copping a staging suspension didn’t help.
Also used as a small forward when he was actually a mid didn’t help.

Did he start reacting to you? Because that has to be one of the strangest things a player has heard coming from randoms on the boundary.
I think the reference was to the 09 ANZAC Day game when Leroy had the chance to ice the game in the dying moments when he was running onto a loose ball heading to the goal square, but fumbling and then having it punched away for a behind, followed by him half-heartedly looking to the umpire for a deliberate rushed call. A few minutes later after the siren was blown you can see all the players going crazy and Leroy looking dejected because it could have been him that was the hero, not Zaka. We definitely never got the limit of his potential.
Anywho, how good is this Waterman kid? It’s looking like we got a good deal for free.

Leroy was Essendon. Looked like a world beater some days and like he’d never played footy others.

I am currently suffering from cfs myself. For me it was from a stressful work year in 2019 followed by copping the flu late that year and then have just never recovered. It basically feels like having a bad cold or flu every day and any exertion wipes you out for a few days after. I am talking for me now the equivalent of walking more than 100m or picking up something heavy for a few seconds etc.
Funnily enough i literally just got a call from xavier campbell asking why i haven’t renewed my membership after 22 years (i’m 36). I told him i have cfs so couldn’t walk from the carpark to the ground and he asked ‘so what is it exactly?’ i said ‘similar to what waterman had’. He was actually very supportive about it and said when i am feeling better text him on his mobile and he’ll get me some free tickets. Well hopefully i do get better at some point in the next few years, i told him people like waterman are a good inspiration for me.

Thanks for the well wishes. It’s easy to get a bit miserable at times, like the other day i saw my 92 year old next door neighbor watering the front garden and had the realisation that i couldn’t do that coz my arms and legs would ache for days after, but you’ve gotta try and stay positive.
Other points from my chat with xavier for those interested:
- He said ‘ask me any one question you want, anything about the club’ i was put on the spot though so couldn’t think of anything unfortunately.
- I told him i’m happy with rutten compared to the previous few years.
- He asked me what i thought of last weeks game I said ‘a decent performance but the umpiring was shithouse as usual when we play up there’ which he agreed with but added ‘it’s all swings and roundabouts though so we’ll hopefully get a good run at some stage’
- clearly the club are going hard on membership the past few wks i have been getting bombarded with emails, texts etc. I did make the point after xavier was talking like we were 4-0 to me, that i’ve been happy with the performances but i’ve thought we are on the way up in the past and then we’ve gone backwards again. He said ‘yeah we are a young side though so we’ll be a bit up and down for a while’.
- overall the bloke is a great salesman, i almost bought a half price membership because of the way he smoozed me, even though i wouldn’t use it
so i could see it will definitely work with a lot of other unsigned members if he calls them. - seemed a nice bloke and actually called me from a mobile which he said to call him on if i have any questions. Surely it’s not his actual work mobile though, i dunno.
