#46 - Lachlan Blakiston

That’s a bit of a problem in this sport…

Pay him out, the constant frees against and just having no awareness is brutal to watch

Every player on the list can play multiple positions, you still need to at least almost break even most of the time. I mean would Jones, Caddy, McKay, Reid, Cox be any worse in the ruck?

As far as the defender depth part, in hindsight Laverde was our depth last year and is still performing that role at GWS now. As far as I can tell from outside the club he seemed like a good clubman and really with our extremely young list he probably would have been worth another year as depth.

He comes cheap argument is a weird one as well. We aren’t a team filled with super stars that need to find a way to squeeze everyone under the cap. Unfortunately he is the very definition of a list clogger right now.

I know I’m saying all this with the benefit of hindsight but you still need to mark this list signing as a mistake and move on. Hopefully someone steps up and Blaki helps our VFL side win a flag.

Spot on.

Wish half the midfield had his energy and drive to compete.

He’s pretty good athletically, and he has a few good moments with ball in hand. But he’s absolutely nowhere near AFL standard. The amount of critical errors he makes, relative to the amount of plays he’s involved in, would likely be at a league-wide high. He’s only playing because of injuries, the only alternative I can see is bringing Gerreyne in as a forward/ruck relief and moving Jones to defence. A pretty dire situation all-round, really.

Edit: I forgot that Ridley will likely be back next week.

He’s playing a helluva lot of football for someone whose signing was a “mistake”.

LAV would possibly be a better option currently as a defender because of his experience, but he can’t play Ruck.

As for all the guys you mentioned as being able to Ruck at the same standard, well…I wouldn’t want any of those guys you mentioned playing Ruck, except for McKay when he’s playing as a forward only.

Like it or not, as frustrating as Blakiston is at times, he will continue to play a chunk of AFL footy this year and next.

He might even improve a little.

I mean, why wouldn’t he at 24 games played ?

His little feather of nail on the ball where he had the ball and line covered, should have smashed 10 rows back (nearly landed in the Carlton players lap) is exactly the type of play he does 10-12 times a game. I imagine all the other unsighted things he does would cost us more than we realise.

He does have a great attitude, athletic and fit.
