#5 Elijah Tsatas (Part 1)

5 games, is that legit ? Collingwoods first pick was 19.

What attributes are they ?

Coming from you this could be read two ways

Both work.

Scott unlikely to elevate him ahead of parish

Genuinely not sure what attributes sets him apart from out other mids at this point.

That said, I do have hopes that he’ll show significant progress this year

Was about Scott’s reluctance to give opportunity to young players, but also agree that I don’t think he gives our midfield a particular point of difference.

like Duzza, spread from stoppage has some pace, good hands and one grab touch off ground.
He is great linking up in a chain as well amassing stats.
Kicking and endurance were his downfall, and adjusting to speed of AFL. Improve both of those he will have more time and space and delivery, meaning he’s trusted more and used more.

I thought this was the obvious bit. His ability to accelerate away from the stoppage is the piece that this site has been looking for for 20 years. We thought the curse of Kane Tenace was broken when we traded for Shiel, but it was a mirage. Tsatas has all the attributes to be that guy. Whether he can convert that to AFL level remains to be seen

Has anyone seen him show continual bursts of pace from stoppages at VFL level though? I think people were questioning this during the year because it was part of his draft profile, is it a myth or does he have genuine excelaration out of packs ?

He certainly did it a few times at the back end of this year.

From the KAYO seat, he has genuine acceleration from the pack, at VFL level, gets to the right places and has a good inside game.

He’s fit, strong and his kicking (allegedly) has improved.

2025 is his year.

I’ve seen it at VFl, also seen Davey show some dash from centre square too. Plus defensive intent and manically chase 3-4 players to lay a tackle. Rare to see that in a EFC centre square.

Burst speed with production, not many if any of our midfielders can take the ball from inside to outside using legs, imo the best attribute a midfielder can have.

He’s also elite with his hands over longer distances that 2 meters.

I’d say Durham is the closest player to what I hope Tsatas can become and hopefully eclipse.

I think the ideal set up would be Tsatas and Parish interchanging with each other. Not sure our midfield can cope with two absolute bull ball hunters who struggle defensively.

So would look something like this

Set up 1
Parish, Caldwell, Durham
Tsatas, Merrett, Caldwell/Durham

Think Caldwell and Duz are our midfield mainstays this year.

From watching VFL I think he will be our best inside mid since Jobe. His outside game not sure about because I think he’s worried about shanking kicks with no pressure.

He’s got really clean hands below his knees and reads the ball beautifully off hands around stoppages. But this burst from congestion that people also talk about has not been a feature of his game at AFL or VFL level, and I’ve seen him play 25+ times.

Agree only issue is Durham is more versatile only one of a few of our inside mids that can also play wing well.

My starting midfield four are Draper, Durham, Caldwell and Merrett. Possibly Parish instead of Caldwell, but Durham is my favourite inside mid. Has a lot of the junkyard dog about him.

He’s also 187cm which is quite a bit taller than all of our other mids (except for Setterfield, or Perkins/Martin if we see them playing on-ball).

I think, and I say this as nicely as I can, you are insane. There you got your reaction.

I’m hoping at some point he breaks into the senior team next season, at the moment there isn’t any room for him.
