#5 Elijah Tsatas

He absolutely has fantastic, clean hands. Great one touch at clearances.

But this isn’t really an example of it.

Another pre-season working on his kicking (& everything else) and more CBAs next year and I think we’ll see a really exciting player emerge.

I don’t know if this is 40 posts later, but has anyone noticed a slight deficiency in Tsatas’ kicking?

Please discuss.

I rate his kicking actually, especially when he does it with his hands.

Probably stands out a bit more because a lot of other Essendon handballs hit the feet or the ground half a meter short

Maybe Tsatas becomes team handball coach and Caldwell becomes team kicking coach.

Edit: And Ridley becomes football marking coach.

I feel some of this discussion is better placed in the Dodoro / list management thread, than here.

Spotlight is on Tsatas because we picked him at 5 over some other good prospects. He his flaws, but they were known on draft night. It’s not Tsatas fault we took him

He could go at 95% disposal efficiency and there’s still a dozen or more here yelling…but what about that one stuff-up?

2024 - would want to know which games were sub games as Elijah subbed at least 3 times and I’m not sure if Pou has more than once

It’s not about his efficiency. It’s about the lack of penetration in his kicking.

yep that dodgy pick up contort to gresh was way better

Going full nuff here and I realise the irony that I was complaining people were talking about his kicking too much, but…

I think a large issue is he holds the ball wrong. He holds the seam in between his index and middle figure, which he then has to manipulate the ball drop from a height to angle down by the time it reaches his foot. This would lead to super inconsistent kicking (shock)

Compared to someone like Merrett who has a more classic grip/kicking motion (ring finger on the seam like how I was taught) and the ball already pre angled so it’s way easier to guide down to your foot.

Playing for Ross the boss must suck

Probably the most vanilla and least impressive top 10 pick we have had in my memory.

Got lots of work to do.

Diffrent players i know but Caddy showed an appetite for the contest just has that look about him that he’s going to be a gun

Wish Tsatas shows the same

That’s a good point and pics Crod.
I noticed that early when he first came to us, how high and flat he holds it but thought “oh he’ll sort that out soon enough “. But it takes time to change such a fundamental thing you’ve grown up with, like addressing the ball and streamlining the drop to boot.

He hasn’t the confidence in his own kicking to regularly drill a ball to a forward yet which is a worry… the scenario we saw with him ignoring Stringer with Jake last week, in a paddock of space and screaming for it near 1/4 time (I think). He wouldn’t pass it.

But he reads the play well, has good hands and gradually getting more at ease with the collisions and pressure in close. He’s still developing in multiple areas. Give him proper minutes in the middle and shovelling the ball out to better distributors like Zach, Calders etc. will help him no end. The kicking will take time but he def has the burn inside to make it at AFL level.

Agree that’s ugly. I think they’re trying to moving him to a cross seem gaj style grip for his field kicking

Are you saying Tsatas doesn’t have an appetite for the contest?
