#5 Elijah Tsatas

Do you want to trade him? Probably need to keep playing him if so.

Wonder if having a broken hand impacted Tsatas’ pressure / tackling in the crows game?

I bet he gets the extension. Otherwise someone might give a third rounder for him if they need midfield depth. You can imagine Sydney extracting max output from him

I would be open to trading Shiel but would also be fine with keeping him. Its unlikely that we get good value for Parish unless we get him fit and if he’s fit I would want him to be a part of our midfield.

Tsatsas’s tackle numbers are damning in that comparison. Just shows he is defensively minded enough. He can stay in the VFL and learn how to run two ways. We already have a downhill skiers when parish comes back and honestly he can earn his spot in the VFL as well

So what’s his excuse for the hawthorn game?
Two tackles as an inside mid is atrocious

His excuse is partly he’s running forward / making the play and he’s benched a lot.

Working on defence in VFL is hard as he’s such a accumulator but Shiel was made to be more defensively minded too last year in the VFL.

He had 5 tackles in the VFL on the weekend.

Clearance: Credited to the player who has the first effective disposal in a chain that clears the stoppage area, or an ineffective kick or clanger kick that clears the stoppage area.

mids sorted by average total clearance with a minimum of 6, state that stand our as being at the bottom of the bell curve are highlighted in green.

The clearance retention rating highlights my earlier point. He is not someone who is able to find space and time with ball, resulting in low quality clearances. It’s not just about kicking efficiency.

kick retention rating but yes. it’s the glaring issue in his game and he needs to fix it to establish himself.

Retention Rating: a measure of how often a player’s kicks are retained by a teammate compared to expectation.

i didn’t include it in the table but his disposal for turnover rate is 4.3 which is bottom of the pile for this inside mid cohort too.

now with turnovers

There is no clearance retention rating. 1st possession to clearance isnt really the same but is probably the closest thing to that and he performs quite well in that stat.

You’re right, I misread.

it’s kick retention rating, and it’s an issue, no hiding from it.

for comparison here are the turnover rates for Darcy and the other top clearance winners in 2021

tsatas’s kick retention rate is off the charts bad.

Impressive stats by Hayes, would be getting a bit of attention from oppo coaches looking for a readymade young key back.

It will be interesting to see these stats with a bigger sample size from Tsatas.

when tsatas gets closed down at a stoppage he throws it on the boot and the ball pops up in the air, goes 20m downfield and gets easily picked off by a halfback who is sweeping behind the stoppage after letting his man get sucked up.

he kicked two of these to tom hird on the weekend.

it’s worse than mcgath’s blind snap when he gets in trouble .

I’m aware of kick retention rating. I wasn’t disputing it, just windys misunderstanding of it. It is a very small sample size though so I would like to see more games from Tsatas and then how those stats look.

for sure. the sample size (and time on ground) for Tsatas are undeniably too small but the data does support the contention that he’s still an unacceptably poor kick (even if there are some glimpses of improvement)
