50 Worst Essendon Losses since 2000 (countdown)

The only thing that gives me any comfort out of this is knowing that this was FC’s best team of the past 30 years and they still couldn’t crack the top 4.

This FC team were total flat track bullies, and we were a caliber of team who flat track bullies feasted on.

I was expecting this one to be A LOT higher

I was watching this game while doing exam revision and fair to say I got a lot of revision done from about half way into the second quarter.

I got into a fight - punches thrown - with a farkhead fark carlton supporter on this day.

I used to go to every games against them, I haven’t been to one since.

It’s also the game that caused the saga to happen.

This one really, really, sucked.

Putting the result aside (I know it’s hard), this game is what finals footy is all about – two traditional rivals facing off in front of a massive crowd on a warm spring day at the MCG. The excitement (and expectation) leading into the game was immense. The atmosphere was awesome – at least until halfway through the first quarter.

In hindsight, it shouldn’t have been a huge surprise this result. They pummeled us only a few weeks prior when Walker almost clean jumped Carlisle.

We were dealing with the Carlton crew – Rocco, Anton and Angelo – sitting behind us that day. From kicking our seats and spitting on the ground behind our heads to screaming obscenities and taunting Essendon supporters as they left early, it was… a vibe. I can’t imagine how bad it must have been in ’99.

Nah, this was way worse than 99 in that respect. (Not the result, obviously.)

in 99, even their supporters didn’t think they could win until the actual siren went. And by the time they stopped cheering and were ready to start chirping, Essendon supporters were already in the car park whinging about Dean Wallis.

But this one? They had 3 and half quarters to be unbearable, smug, c*nts. And they were.

This is why I didn’t have it higher. I remember having absolutely no confidence that we’d even put up a fight and that’s pretty much what unfolded. Even after kicking the first 3, I expected a loss.

The Port game a couple of weeks prior was the confirmation for me that we were going to be pretenders in finals and were limping to the end of the season.

Every Carlton fan I’ve known has been a total prick. Antagonistic just for the sake of being antagonistic.

I know this thread is about losses, but one of the best memories of this century is breaking this mob in 2012.

They were looking good after 2011 and had started out 2012 on fire in the first three weeks, including pumping the early Buckley era Pies by 10 goals. I’m pretty sure they were Premiership favourites at one point.

They were widely expected to thrash us in round 4 and instead we beat them easily (five goals and probably should have been more). This sent them into a tailspin which led to them missing the finals which led them to appointing a washed up Mick Malthouse which led to ruin pretty quickly. Great stuff.

And yet, I somehow have a 2012 game very relevant to your comment coming up later on in this list.

The Lonergan tackle.

They were early flag favourites going into this game against us. The arrogance on display from their supporters leading up to the match was something to behold.

My mates and I were sitting amongst their cheer squad and we unleashed hell on them….unrelenting.

I sincerely hope when we eventually win a final, it’s against FC

Forget Richmond, Hawthorn and Collingwood fans – an arrogant Carlton supporter base is, in my experience, by far the worst around. People have forgotten how insufferable they can be, largely due to their lack of success this century. When they’re fired up and the team is flying, no supporter base comes close.

I knew this game was lost as soon as I saw Judd take a hanger over David Hill of all people. We didn’t give a shout that day.

There were some bad losses in 2012

The Melbourne loss when we were 8-1 (seriously? ■■■■■■■ Melbourne?) which started the slide.

Anzac Day by 1 point when the winning goal came off Jarryd Blair’s thigh and the review umpire not noticing.

Sydney when we came from the clouds to get within a kick and Dempsey was playing on from 55 when the siren went.

Thrashings by Hawthorn, st Kilda and, most gallingly, a free falling Carlton.

Just a very frustrating season.

They’d just knocked off Collingwood the previous week in a big night game, who had been absolutely dominant the previous year, only losing to Geelong IIRC. Couldn’t believe what I was seeing when we beat Carlton so easily considering our previous games against them. I completely fell for our April-June 2012 form and thought we were going places.
