50 Worst Essendon Losses since 2000 (countdown)

He played the first 9 or 10 games, but looked clearly injured from about round 3. But he still rucked one-out despite the fact that he couldn’t run.

Hird did do everything he could to ‘not’ play Giles that year, though. He even chucked Carlisle up against NicNat, to just really cement Buckets’ feelings about the club and football in general.

He’s no Brad but some of Hirdy’s team selections were garbage

I walked out of that one early. We were so utterly ■■■■ that I didn’t care whether we won or lost.

I think this was the game Levi Casboult (on debut) ran down Courtney Dempsey.

So over a 5 game period across 2011/2012 against Carlton, we:

  • had a Draw
  • Lost by 74 points
  • Lost a final by 62 points
  • Won by 30 points
  • Lost by 96 points

The two FC games in 2013 were fantastic

The Round 3 game against them in 2014 was awesome too. We smashed them on a balmy Sunday night. I remember that one fondly.

Knights’ Essendon did well against Ratten’s Carlton.

Ratten’s Carlton did well against Hird’s Essendon.

Hird’s Essendon did well against Malthouse’s Carlton.

Another one of those players that I remember seeing his name on the list, can’t remember him ever playing. And couldn’t tell you what position he played, but I assume a flanker?

Late to the party but the ‘83 GF was my first traumatic experience, standing in the outer amongst the rabid Hawks supporters with my team getting absolutely pummelled. I was in shock.

1990 was “soul” destroying. Aimlessly walking inside the stadium, slow to leave. Finally got home after 6 and went straight to bed. Didn’t feel any better the following morning.

I think it was in ‘92 playing the Hawks at the G and they smashed us by 130+ points I think. That was tough to take at the time.

Actually, losing to the Hawks are the worst losses for me.

I don’t remember one of his touches, but that may be because I was overseas for this game. Could not believe the score updates coming through despite it being clear that our season was falling apart.

What? Is that right?
Was Brad Scott our coach.
How can you possibly be injury hit and not pLaY tHe kIdS?

Coming into the season there was Michael Ross, Baguley, Lee, Dell’Olio, Anthony Long, Steinberg, Luke Davis, Jerrett, Kai, Dalgleish, Nick O’B and Hal Hunter all below 25 games.

That list was certainly primed to break out and go for a premiership run. Goddard was the missing piece.

Just realised I made an error (have now edited the 25 to 20), as Hibberd was playing his 20th game. Hibberd was already a decent player of course and was 22, so hardly a skinny kid.

Nuggetty little inside mid. Picked from the WAFL as a 21 yo I think. Might have been under Hird when the direction seemed to have been to draft competitive contested guys? Bit of a Howlett the lesser.

Excellent VFL player, just too small and slow and without the weapons to step up to the next level.

It’s still a bit of a surprise.
Late in the year.
Prior to the game we were in the 8 though. So playing the kids wasn’t explored.

What a way to exit the 8 though.
Losing by 96 points to a team that was outside the 8.

I’d actually have this game up higher. And I’d forgotten about this game until it was posted.
Come to think of it, that 2012 capitulation was something to behold.
End of round 13 coming off the bye, we beat Freo (outside the 8) in WA and we’re 3 games inside the 8 and sitting 3rd. We smash the Bulldogs by 80, then get smashed by the Saints by 12 goals (they were in the 8 by percentage), then recover to smash port by 8 goals in SA (Port were bottom 4) to still be 3 games and 22% inside the 8.
We then lose to Geelong by 60, Hawks by 90 (both are fair given where they were), Adelaide by 4 (they were top at the time), then North by 4 goals (they were finals bound), then this Carlton loss by 16 farking goals (who were outside the 8). We’d gone from 3 games +22% inside the 8 to a game out and 5% behind in the space of 5 weeks.
We’re still a chance but then the Tigers by 4 goals (they were outside the 8) to end our finals chances.
Then the loss to Collingwood by 5 goals (finals bound).

This is 2012. We lost to Carlton in the Elim Final the year before. And did what we’ve done every year for the last 20 years after reaching the finals which was self correct back out of the finals the next year.
If it wasn’t Hird coaching, we’d have wanted to sack the coach.

I like to think that these two sentences go hand-in-hand, hehe.

Guessing there’ll be fewer forgettable games as we approach the end, but the Marvel games kind of blur together, so who knows?

Yep, he had truly lost the plot by 2015. He was making bizarre calls at selection and he didn’t have bomber there to guide him anymore

He fully deserved to get the sack( forced resignation)

I definitely remember leading in to it.
I didn’t go to the game though.
Didn’t even go to the North game the week before. Nor the Hawthorn loss.

I think I did go to the Geelong loss at Marvel as that was a sellout game (and away game) but I may be confusing seasons.
If it’s the same game I was thinking, that loss broke me that year and I didn’t think we were any hope so didn’t attend the rest of the games that season.

For this Carlton game, I was working that day, so the game was over by the time I got home. I definitely recall slamming the coffin shut on the season after that loss.

Looking at their goal kickers…
Casboult, Garlett, Brock McLean (WTF), Kade Simpson (WTAF) and Andrew Walker had 3 goals each. Waite kicked 5.

I can sort of understand (based on our history) losing to top 8 teams by 16 goals. Losing to teams outside of it whilst we’re in it by that much is harder to take.
