50 Worst Essendon Losses since 2000 (countdown)

It’s bizarre both how often and how much previous admin/coaches have overrated our list

Oh, I remember that one, that was actually a decent game of footy.

I know we lost but it was a pretty close contest most of the afternoon.

It isn’t just common to us.
It’s common across the league.
It’s not even solely concentrated to Aussie Rules.
Every sporting club works on optimism, not pessimism. In general, people don’t get the best out themselves if they are continually thinking they aren’t good enough.
Some few greats use it as fuel, the majority of players don’t.

But yes, I didn’t see much consistent positivity from year to year in our list changes since 2002. We’ve been better the last three or four years, but it’s yet to be tested, so can still produce the similar results as previous years.

I’m not sure if that was the day that North used all of their emergencies and also had to call down a player who wasn’t named but was attending because of a late injury. I seem to think we won that game, but the North games sort of blend in to one another.

Most memorable one (apart from the obvious era ending comeback) was the ‘Chappy’ game in round 1 in 2014.

Worst Loss Since 2000 No. 11

Elimination Final 2009

Adelaide 4.3.27 12.4.76 18.9.117 26.10.166
Essendon 3.3.21 5.7.37 8.8.56 10.10.70

Notes

  • AKA “The Nathan Lovett-Murray in the ruck game”

  • AKA “The game Essendon played with no ruckman”

  • 20-year-old Cale Hooker led the hitouts for Essendon with 12. Lovett-Murray won 5.

  • Hayden Skipworth’s last game of AFL football.

  • More embarrassing than unexpected, given the side that Essendon put out.

Quinn the Eskimo?

Didn’t we have only 1 fit player left that didn’t play. From memory it was a ruckman too

Just googled, Knights dropped Bellchambers

I really expected this one to be higher. Getting thrashed this badly by a team who weren’t even top 4 showed how far off we were despite sneaking into the 8.

I remember almost no details of this game other than that. One of the dumbest selection decisions on this or any other planet. It’s not like he’d even been playing particularly badly. Fkg Knights.

I am so used to us putting up weak effort and games over the past 20 years that i just forget half of them

I just remember being massively outclassed from beginning to end. It was close at quarter time, but it just seemed like we were only just hanging on.

The original interstate finals belting.

There was a lot of hype after Hurley (and Lloyd) kicked us into our first finals since 2004. While the loss wasn’t unexpected, I don’t think anyone saw that coming.

Maybe hindsight is influencing my memory of the expectations. Football Park was a pretty grim place for us in those years, so I expected very little regardless of how good we looked in Melbourne.

In hindsight the magnitude of the loss was to be expected. We were one of the weaker top 8 sides in history based on record, while Adelaide were a very strong team that year. They should have won the following week vs Collingwood at the G- the famous “right in front of me” game.

I’d completely forgotten McPhee kicked four that game.

Bellchambers hadn’t played the week before in our epic win against the hawks. He’d only played a handful of games in 09 and was still raw as all fark. He only got games because Hille had gone down with the knee injury. But one thing he did have going for him was that he was - in fact - a ruckman.

With Ryder copping a suspension for punching Luke Hodge, Bellchambers was the only option to bring in. And they did select him. He was named in the team on thursday night.

But as a last minute change on game day, Knights thought it would be a good idea to drop the only ruckman we had, to ‘bRiNg iN mOrE rUn.’

That ‘more run’ they brought in for the sake of having a ruckman… was Michael Quinn

I was shocked to see that Quinn managed to kick one of our 8 goals.

Looks like we’re about to enter the top 10. I’m sure it’ll be as frustrating as it will be interesting. Dunno about you lot but I’m a sucker for misery so I’m more than happy to be reminded of another 10 reasons why I should be angry at the club.

And @Ta0Ta, love the initiative and really looking forward to what lies ahead. Thanks heaps for what has been a terrific read and heaps of ‘fun.’

Thanks heaps, mate. It’s been great fun seeing the responses to each post and the memories people have that you would never hear about otherwise. Next post incoming…
