50 Worst Essendon Losses since 2000 (countdown)

I didn’t think that was a bad game.

We should have won but it was a pretty fun game to watch live.

Curious about these two games. I don’t remember anything about them and they didn’t stand out when I was reviewing each season’s results. Can you enlighten me?

Pathetic effort against a ■■■■■■■ ■■■■ side who were destroyed from the grand final. Game over at quarter time

One week after we ended the saints run, we turned up our toes in typical essington fashion with a finals spot on the line.

Maybe not top 10 but could be in the 50

The Nicholls game?

How have none of the 2025 games made it on your list. Some of the worst games I have seen have been this year especially Richmond week 18

Last game of 2025 absolutely thrashed all over. Gold coast rubbing salt in the wounds even more and showing no mercy.

The suns then qualified for finals through this match and won a final 2 weeks later. Making Essendon the only side after 2004 not to win a final

Worst Loss Since 2000 No. 8

Round 18 2023

Geelong 7.5.47 9.10.64 14.11.95 18.14.122
Essendon 0.1.1 3.2.20 4.2.26 7.3.45

Notes

  • Finals on the line.

  • Essendon never reached Geelong’s QT score.

  • Geelong started the round and ended the season below Essendon on the ladder.

  • Tom Hawkins kicked 5 goals and took 8 marks. It was the last time Hawkins would achieve either of these stats before retiring in 2024. He was also awarded 3 Brownlow votes, ensuring that he averaged more votes against Essendon than any other club.

i’m surprised how many truly terrible losses have been in Brad Scott’s tenure. They have just become white noise and I barely remember them.

32 scoring shots to 10 indicates the score could have actually been a lot worse.

Seems a pretty common occurrence against these ■■■■■

IIRC we had pumped Adelaide the week before, and had look genuinely impressive. We had a chance to finish inside the top 4 that week.

Consistent performances like that over the years, high-stakes game with finals aspirations on the line only to barely give a whimper, have lead me to believe that large parts of the playing group genuinely did not want success.

I remember being worried about the Adelaide game, only for us to play our best footy of the year in the first half. Of course, we dropped our level in the second half and the margin wasn’t anything special by the end. It takes so little for our sides to be complacent and think they’ve made it. The first quarter against Geelong was beyond embarrassing.

The 1st quarter was the only time I’ve ever had opposition fans laugh at us in th3 stands.

This game honestly made me disgusted. One where i sat there and was like we are so putrid and sh*t that you can tell there was no effort and the players couldnt give two farks. I remember walking out and saying how much that loss almost broke me

You’re missing the 2006 game against Adelaide aka the “Trent Hentschel game”, but otherwise pretty accurate. I’m guessing the Swans final won’t make it given that everyone knew we were getting smashed.

Plus hird was injured not even 50/50 and fletcher was on one leg injured too if i recall

Mercuri certainly shouldn’t have played, I don’t remember Fletcher being injured but it wouldn’t surprise.

Hird was injured. Mecuri hadn’t been himself, really, for a season. Long and Wallis retired.
It was a GREAT team. Deserved more success that it achieved. In a way, after winning 2000 the club sort sat back on it’s haunches and lost all its drive to succeed. Just sort of expected success without really having to try.

Yeah, Fletch was injured too. Maybe a cracked bone in the shin or something? I was travelling in Spain at the time, compulsively logging in to the EFC website once a day and every damn day watching an n horror as another player went down hurt. Followed the game up to half time via veeeery slow score updates on the floundering website, then had to run off and catch a 8 hour bus to another city. Wasn’t entirely confident but still thought we’d most likely win, then a couple of hours later the one Australian on the bus with a mobile phone got a text saying we’d lost. Never watched the game to this day.
