There's no issue. Give him more than 7 games.
Pity Joe didn't grow up in a footy family.Middle fingers down the seams, thumbs toward the laces, how do you get that if you spin it on the way in?Yeah, nah.Annoys me when players spin the ball in their run-up. Even Jobe.
You're trying to hit the ball at a certain point, how about you ensure you get friggin' step one right?
Cricket bowlers do it, left hand for 14 steps of their run up then bring both hands up, swap it to right, delivery stride & bowl.
If it's something you've always done, then you get used to it & it's a non issue.
How long do they have the ball in their hands before a normal kick? Half a second, maybe 2 at most?
Whoever taught Jobe to kick a football must have been some sort of hack.
With most people's run-ups, kicking or bowling - just is. And if it's working (or at least not making things worse), let it go.
Remember when the Hawks got Dunstall to help Buddy with his kicking, and he got him running in dead straight and (generally) kicking about 20º right of where he wanted it?
True.
Even if Joe's dad was as clueless as Jobe's must have been, you'd think some uncle would take an interest and set him right.
Funny thought, playing junior football I never saw players shank the ball from thirty out like they do at the highest level of the game. I mean missing everything. And I played with and against some friggin' mongs, let me tell you.

:o
When was the last time you watched juniors?
It happens.
Exactly. Watch any of the top 5 tennis players with their racquet just before service. Started as a kid I suspect.Yeah, nah.Annoys me when players spin the ball in their run-up. Even Jobe.

Going only on these two rounds it comes down to his run up. When he runs in straight, he is a better chance of kicking it straight. When he goes for more distance, he runs at an angle, out to the left and hooks it badly as he tries to hoof it too hard. Looks like he is not confident of making the distance. His general field kicking is pretty good and l am sure he will improve quickly.
I think his little Jobe skip in his run up from inside 40 meters has really helped him, I feel only his kicking from 50 and further is where he needs the most work, He doesn't do the little skip because he needs to generate more power.
He will figure it out it will take time and confidence but he will get there.
And still.... WHY THE FARK IS MATTHEW LLOYD NOT THERE TWICE A WEEK TAKING HIM THROUGH PROCESS AND RHYTHM!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Because they want to get the grass well established before they let anyone start ripping it out.
Does he kick the 5 in the Grand Final? He'll kick 1 x goal most games (15)
And kick a couple on a few (say 3 lots of 2 (6)
And 1 x bag (5)
and some really solid contributions (A few 3 goal games)
So thet ends up being 36.
Yep, 36.
sH$T YOU'RE RIGHT!
36 (home and away)
14 in finals.
4-qualifying.
5-prelim
5-granny.
Sorry, my bad.
He will kick 3 goals this week.
Henderson wont know whether to go on Daniher or Carlisle or go forward.
I remember Henderson out bodying Daniher easily last year, I can't wait to see the first contest where Daniher either ignores the body and flys or hold his ground and out reaches. Either way the future of getting taken to town by Daniher will be all over Hendersons face and will be priceless. He will kick 3 goals this week.

I'll be happy if Joe kicks 20 goals this year.
I don't expect him to play every game (maybe 15), and given he cant kick straight and we tend to share it around a lot then it's not vital that we get it to him enough to kick 3 goals per game.
He might go a couple of matches where he doesn't kick any, but then he might kick 3 in red time against a lesser opponent.
He's going to be playing decoy half the time to make space for others, plus he'll be ranging up the ground half the time just trying to get a kick, or spending 10% of each game as a ruckman.
20 goals would be a decent return I think.
50 next year though.
I don’t really see a problem with Joe’s technique to be honest. Sure it has a bit of the ‘Buddy Franklin arc’ to it, but I was always told even up to around under 16’s to just go with the routine and action that you are comfortable with.
I would say to Joe to make sure that he is relaxed in the shoulders and that if he feels more comfortable going into his natural arc, then to do it. Even if he is missing now, he will still get better as he still only young.
Considering I was one of the best set shots in my team and played forward, my biggest tip for kicking goals closer to goal is when you are about to make contact with the ball, just delay it a fraction and let your foot come up a fraction more than you normally would and you will be surprised just how accurate you can become and how much more control you have over your ball drop.
We all know Joe can hoof them long from outside 50 so distance will never be a problem so he can probably afford to do this for most of his set shots.
He always gets good connection, he just needs time to develop a solid routine that works for him and which he is most comfortable with, I don’t believe in this ‘walk in straight at the goals’ business you hear of today, because you can tell with players like Buddy, Cloke etc that it just makes them look uncomfortable and restricts their kicking even further and after a while they revert back to their old routine.
That is just my 2 cents worth though.
Lets all be honest, there is an issue with Joe's kicking. Just like there was with Hurley's, yet everyone refused to see it.
Hopefully he will improve over time, there's no reason he can't. But there is still an issue at the moment.

At 7 or 8 games, Hurley's kicking was mint.
He's still got a pretty good, straight action, and still a very very good field kick, but after 2011 he really started to feel the weight of the world (team) on his shoulders & that showed in his set shot. I wouldn't be surprised if, now they've taken that burden off him, he starts to hit the shots he does have a lot more accurately like he did prior to 2011.
Joe looks a bit all over the shop, he looks nervy. And at the height he's dropping it from there's a lot more that can go wrong.

I think people are unnecessarily panicking. Kicked two goals straight against North.
Sprayed one out on the full. Not two straight.I think people are unnecessarily panicking. Kicked two goals straight against North.

I don’t know if Hurley is technically better than Joe. Hurley releases the ball with both hands, which is very rare to see with AFL footballers, and means his ball drop is higher. Often people will release with both hands on their wrong side. Really, Hurley is quite an effective field kick despite this flaw.
I think Daniher has a more classical action than Hurley, but is a bit nervy. His kicking from outside 40 looks a lot more competent than from close. Anthony Daniher was one of the best kicks I’ve seen in red and black. Obviously Joe isn’t as good a kick as his Dad, but I reckon he has got sound fundamentals, and will improve over time.

Like to see Joe to take more marks on the lead with arms out full stretch. Little chance for spoils from behind. He should be quick enough to get the lead and with the likes of Goddard, Chappy, zacka, widers, heppell, Watson etc providing the pass.
Let Carslie take the overheads as he was doing just that - clunking marks in the backline.
