Plus Setterfield. Can’t play all three
They are not slow
Well they’re not quick
Tsatas and Shiel should should give us some pace through the middle although I haven’t seen Tsatas show anything yet…pace wise.
I like Caldwell- he’s young, he’s got plenty of upside and won’t shirk a physical contest- his boxing background provides a hardness we need.
We did trade for him thinking he’d be ahead of parish in the pecking order. Indeed iirc he started in the middle ahead of parish Rd 1 2021 and promptly did his hammy Rd 2. From there parish took over and never looked back.
Then subsequent to that, we had no designs on taking an inside mid at the draft that year but when Hobbs slid to our pick we felt compelled to. And then 12 months later we traded (a packet of chips) for Setterfield. And now Durham well in the mix providing something a little bit different.
All of which is great for our overall midfield depth. But probably doesn’t help Caldwell become the bona fide first choice mid that he’d love to be. Let’s just hope he plays this high half forward role to a high standard this year and when he does get his turn in the middle as a genuine on-baller that he seizes it.
It’s really just an example of the constant disconnect between coaching, development, and our list management strategy.
Parish should have been fast tracked in the midfield after what he showed in 2016. If he had been I dare say list management decisions would have posted out differently.
1000% he was drafted as a midfielder, because who in their right mind woukd pick a player at number 1 as a back pocket player…
I actually think our midfield depth is as good as I can remember it.
i.e. The number of guys we have on our list who we can capably rotate through there.
I do think the overall collective quality or output is the question though still. You’d love an out and out dynamic or gun big bodied presence in there just to round it out. Someone in the style of Bont, De Goey, Butters (dynamic, not big bodied), Tom Greene etc. But wouldn’t everyone.
Agree
Dunkley sigh
Even though I think it was the right decision at the time, we’d be way better off right now if we only took back Heppell, Hooker and Hurley in 2017 instead of all the suspended players.
Dunkley would have cost us Perkins/Reid/Cox and Hobbs
Not that upset about it
He is a mid forced to play forward.
I’ll question that at this stage of their careers.
We would have gotten other players.
We move on
And thats on Worsfold. Blind Freddy could see Darcy Parish was the roviest rover that ever roved. One of a litany of bad decisions Worsfold made that had negative long term impacts
He’s a reject mid from another club wasting space on our list coz he can’t break into our B grade midfield.
Well they’re not quick
Caldwell has a lightning burst over 20m, recording one of the highest 20m sprints (2.983 seconds) of the TAC Cup.
What is this true? He needs to show this off. Always seems to be a little slow
