Heâs easily the best footballer on our list. That is no question. Do you really think he is a driving factor in sponsorship going forward? Yeah, he is a gun - i get that. But i mean, we have achieved absolutely zero heading into his 12th season of football, and still had good sponsors.

i dont think anything sponsorship wise hinged on this guy. He isnt marketable, yep heâs a gun. He WAS our captain, and now after a failed trade attempt isnt. He has the personality of a fence post. Weâve been trash his entire career. Why would him leaving change who wants to partner with us? If anything, i think we would be more appealing to sponsors if we did trade him, it would have signalled a clear direction and intent. Heâs gonna fk off in a year, for probably less in a trade
Guys like tippa, caddy, kako, draper, orazioâŚthose types bring in sponsorship. Exciting players bring sponsorship and crowds, because they are marketable. Merrett, despite being our best player, isnt that. And now he is a disgraced former captain who tried to leave

Just joking, and my comment about sponsors was tongue in cheek. Though I was told that during the Saga, Club Sponsors were happy with the publicity, so I guess same thoughts could apply.
I said it all along that we should never take personally what a player does off the field, and seriously I do not care at all about Merrett and his desire to play elsewhere. In spite of Merrett being our best player by a long way, I actually think that the Hawks offer was fair and while I agree with the hard stance taken on the contract, I would have taken it.
I would have also farked off three or four other blokes on the list.
Unlike others here, I only care about winning games. I have seen great footy in my life and while my memory fades, I still have YouTube. We are going to try and get to Perth this year for a game and lunch with the Professor (@Albert_Thurgood), so maybe if @Koala is making the trip, we can have a larger gathering.

Given we lack small forward depth on the list, I think we made a big mistake not letting him walk.

So gift hawthorn a flag for pick what 14 / 23 / 23 was it? Lose our best player and we already had a really good draft hand. Personally looks like a bad move. The club chose not to get dovaston when they had the chance and there are better small forward prospects in 2026. No thank you.

Itâs funny reading about all the people here who want to let Merrett go cause he wants to leave. What happens next year when caddy wants to leave or Robertâs or Clarke? Do we just trade everyone who wants to leave? What if players dont want to be drafted by us - do we not draft them and maybe focus on players down at number 74?
we have an AFL license and we can keep any player with a contract and we can draft any player we choose to - Merrett is contracted for 2 more years. We donât just let players walk and break contract cause we feel sad for ourselves - that is the attitude of the loser.
