My Company operates exactly the same as Aceman’s, if one is offered a job at one of our competitors you are marched out with security right behind you. If you have a company car thats left on site and you can catch a bus or an uber home. This has nothing to do with short sightedness but everything to do with making your competitor better and bringing in house IP with you. Although on that point I dont think there’s much IP the Dorks could use from us.
Yep. I thought “getting walked” was fairly commonplace. Not saying I agree that it’s best practice, but it’s definitely a thing. From the employee point of view, you still get your notice paid out too.
If you accept a job at a competitor why should you remain employed at your current employer? Frog March the traitors out and move them on.
He should not show happiness at that.
I doubt it is a written policy.
But it really doesn’t matter so much whether it is or isn’t. Very few people would want to challenge QANTAS’ lawyers to begin with. But also, they incentivise their staff so that they are less likely to look elsewhere for better paid job roles.
From the sounds of it, it isn’t a policy across the entire workforce, so I’d guess there may be a ‘verbal agreement’ as you get promoted stating what you can and can’t do. And if they are ever challenged, they’ll fall back on protecting their IP.
Also, it’s not so difficult to move people on. If you time it well, you can make a person redundant, not fill the role for 2 to 3 months, reassign his tasks to others in the meantime, then get someone else specific for that role. It can still be challenged, but it’ll be tough to win that argument.
Regardless, if you’re paid well (and consistently better than your competition), it’s unlikely you go elsewhere anyway.
Sacking people because they have job interviews elsewhere is the stupidest thing Ive ever heard lmao.
Sorry Ace, not a personal thing but cmon mate.
Tell that to the hundreds sacked during COVID who got a hefty payout.
Yes, its in everyone’s employment contract at my place of work. Any non company approved interaction with a competitor or if you’ve accepted employment with a direct competitor is grounds for immediate dismissal. You are frog marched out the door, - and fair enough too in my view. Once Merret said he wanted out we should have negotiated with other Clubs and gotten the best deal, - IMHO.
Depend on which party initiated the interaction.
Zach is Dryping with sarcasm
not at my work, any non approved interaction and you are out this is a non negotiable and clearly outlined in the terms of the employment contract.
Somehow, I don’t think what Aceman was intimating with his experience was relevant to the hundreds that were sacked during covid. Maybe it affected a small handful in each state.
Almost every company had to make people redundant either leading up to the first lockdowns or during the year.
The company I worked for at the time shrunk in half. And didn’t grow its workforce back.
I wouldn’t use what happened through covid as a standard. It was a once in a generation experience.
Is this a written policy of your Company ? Reckon Fair Work Australia would have a field day with this.
Sorry as I’ve been at our annual Black Friday spiel this morning.
Yes, in my department it is in our contracts that non approved contact with direct competitors is a case for dismissal.
There is nothing stopping me seeking a job in another field or profession.
Due to our security clearances we have a whole list of things in our contract we have to adhere to and some are much harsher than than higher up management and the execs.
I’m not across many of the other dozens of departments as I don’t really deal with them but I know some in high sales positions have similar contracts
Would really be positive for the development of our players and supporters if the coach scowled and spat and showed displeasure at Merrett and the board that made the no trade call for the club. That’s a good look!!
The retention of Merrett may prove to be the wrong decision. But it’s 100% the wrong decision right now if the coach marginalised Merrett and showed it.
And it may end up being a great decision. We will know in about 8 months.

You wouldn’t listen to what someone has to offer from an unsolicited phone call?
I can’t imagine any other AFL side is clamoring for IP from the Essendon Football Club. Unless they want very good guidance on what not to do when running a football club, I guess.
That’s a difficult question for me to answer as I love my work the industry I’m in and the company I work for. If I was approached it most likely would be from a recruiting firm which is not the same as being approached from a competitor. I guess I would assess and make a decision from there.
That said, though this whole “saga” shows anyone can move for a price.
My personal view on the Merret issue is once he advised he wanted out, we should have traded him out and gotten the best deal for the EFC. We had no obligation to send him to a potential Finals bound and much hated club. Merret and his Manager should have read the room and approached the club first and sought the clubs view if a deal was possible. He created this shitfest after all.
I hope we trade him out at the end of the year to any club other than Hawthorn.
What I wouldn’t give for this employment law discussion to take an unexpected bent into discussions about milk….
Sorry as I’ve been at our annual Black Friday spiel this morning
This is industry code for aceman being at a job interview.
Spot on sir re McGrath as captain. Ide love it to go to a bloke who can articulate hes ■■■■■■ off, and players scared not to look him in in the eye and get on board. I fear mcgrath with have them counting pigeons in the stands in the huddle. My pick is Duz, but Calders in the mix for sure. Hepp was a great guy, you beaut, pat on the bum after a ■■■■ poor result, all that. Not sure thats what we want. I dont no McGrath other than what ive seen publicly, so maybe he has a streak in him, will see I guess if hes picked
