Sure, but the rat painted us into a horrible corner with his farked choice, I wish he was gone but his selection of whorks and their intent to use that leverage farked the deal, and he piled it on while trying to portay a poor little boy public image
We were going to be in that position with or without and everyone is aware of that, so not sure how much that will sting if he drops itā¦keeping him was never about improving our onfield position in 26
That is certainly a take.
Which is it?
I do wonder now if he will spend more time away from the middle again, certainly as the year progresses, if we want to give the other mids more game time and even some of the new recruits.
A fit Merrett helps win games but in what will at absolute best be a year at the bottom rungs of the wildcard spots, I dont want our final position inflated due to a Merrett inspired season before he inevitably buggers off in 12 months.
Both, Iāve seen it happen to others and Iāve been involved in the process aswell
Because heās Evil?
yes it farking is
Iām not sure why itās surprising that people would be supportive of Zach as an Essendon player and not supportive of him at another club. Isnāt it the whole point that we want Essendon to be successful?
I get thereās emotion around loyalty, especially when itās a captain, but itās done now, Zachās still at Essendon, and everyoneās best served by Essendon getting the most out of Zach as a player and a person next year. Grudges donāt serve success, and itād be very much the Essendon of the last 20 or so years to get distracted by that. Good clubs move on and focus on winning football games.
That would be very odd in my experience in the aviation industry. To say the least.
Biggest of all would be Ron Barassi - Premiership captain of Melbourne, went to Carlton as Captain coach (and took them to a flag four years later)
Not sure it had anything to do with Zack . More to do with the changing of the drafting/recruiting gang.
Wife wouldnāt say that though.![]()

Of course we all want Essendon to be successful again. And regularly. Merrett, our best player and club captain for a number of years, is still central to that. How his move was approached is the thing. Was hugely disrespectful to the club just when we needed him as captain to foster in new draftees, support the changes at the top and work with the list manager, coach, CEO and players. He basically spurned his responsibilities he signed up to and well paid for .. and basically may as well have stuck a finger up to us all.
Merrett instigated this remember. The Club had to take a stand given our situation. And it was Hawthorn and Mitchell playing him along (who hate us). So Iām very glad the Board and Scott did hold firm.
So yep itās done now. And good clubs move on and we are. But theyāll be scars which he, a few of his teammates and a fair few fans are left with for a while. Completely natural and understandable.
Point being there, those captains moving clubs were all a long time ago. A cluster of them in the 80s when it was a thing chasing the big money move when pay still wasnāt enough to rely on a football only salary then.
Merrett and his attempted move whilst captain is a modern day outlier.
I agree and I think the batch of quality recruits, with 2 gold edged leaders amongst them, will reinvigorate Merrett.
We now have a growing list of young leaders about the place including Roberts and Durham.
Iām hoping hawthorn takes a backwards step this year and our mischievous disruptive Weddle offer becomes reality. This might extinguish any future Merrett move and totally vindicate the clubs decision to not trade away a contracted champion player.

itās got more of a freemasons ritual vibe than a collective bargaining agreement
Totally agree with you and @Checkside.
This may actually work out really well. I rate Zach highly, certainly as a player, but as a Captain he hasnāt really been a great success. Leads by example in the professionalism stakes, but I personally donāt find him to be particularly inspiring in an emotional sense. Not the kind of guy that fires up and gets hugely passionate, you know a bit of a chest beater, when itās needed.
Now unfortunately Andy Pandy is not going to cut it in those stakes either, if he becomes captain, he will be a noice captain in the vein of Heppel. The more tings change the more they stay the same.
I would like to see Langford, Caldwell or Redmond as Captain.
But only if Redmond gets his ā ā ā ā together and takes it more seriously, perhaps a captain ship might ignite the fire.
One thing I have learned from this thread today. Who knew baggage handling was such a cut-throat industry?
ditto. I want to know the nature of the IP and security issues that warrant managers being sacked for exploring career options.
these same managers do move jobs, so there must be strong systems in place to maintain flight and cargo security.
this is not having a go at Aceman, but rather (potentially) unfair workplace practices.
