#7 Zerrett - Welcome to Hotel California

I guess if you mushed Draper and Goldy together you get something like Sean Darcy.

Not this guy

Trade him.

Reckon this stays quiet until the Crichton. Then it blows up if he puts the foot down on his desire to move.

I don’t know if I’m just being pissy because he’s leaving, or trying to convince myself of something… but Zach’s played 251 games and I really, really struggle to remember any really inspirational occasions like the Hird goal against WCE, Jobe on that ANZAC Day, Lloyd smashing into Sewell etc.

Not to say he hasn’t performed at a really high level for a long time, but I don’t recall one Zach Merrett moment where I’ve jumped out of my chair with excitement and just gone ā€œFARRRRRRRRK THAT’S OUR CAPTAIN!ā€

Tell me if I’m wrong, but in my mind, he’s pretty good at footballing, but he’s hardly an inspirational captain.

ā€œOMG IS THAT VANILLA???ā€, said Brad Scott excitedly.

He was pretty good in last year’s Anzac Day and he’s definitely had breakout quarters where he has turned the game off his boot. I am struggling to think of games in particular but that could be because lots of his work is linking up with others.

Yes. You are being pissy. Blitzers now going to some lengths to denigrate Merrett.

Nah, not entirely fair.

His weakness has always been lack of captains goals and the like.

I’m not meaning to denigrate at all CJ, hence the qualifier in the question. I just think at the end of his career his highlight reel will have fewer inspirational moments than others who have held the position of Essendon captain.

But happy to be proven wrong.

Nah that’s fair IMO.

I don’t think it’s denigrating him either. You can acknowledge that he is a very good player who consistently performs at a high level, which just about everyone here would agree with, whilst simultaneously believing that he’s not a guy who necessarily seizes big moments all that often (especially around goal) or inspires by putting his body on the line.

He’s an absolute pro who just does most things to an above average to high standard

I just want to say if Merrett stays I’ll be happy but I still wouldn’t buy and if his clothing.

Let’s swap him for Jobe’s Brownlow.

Just checked his 3 X finals performances. Absolute hot garbage

Now come to think of it goes missing in big games

Move this spud on he’s ā– ā– ā– ā–

I think in comparison to real match winners like Bont, Danger, Martin even Daicos now Merrett very rarely grabs the game and will boot 2/3 goals in the final quarter and win the games. But his around the ground efforts even in 2/3 of our earlier games this year we won he was quite clearly BOG and the reason we won games in the final Q.

Edit: Still trade the ā– ā– ā– ā– .

Not every captain has to be ā€œHimā€.

They do have to be loyal though.

He’s a very different style of player to the guys who can physically impact in those obvious moments. Merrett kills you with a thousand small cuts. And if we’d ever managed to draft one of those bigger mids , Zach might have been able to get forward of the footy more.
