The pass to Menzie ( in the second last game of the year?) sums up much of his career. That kick was laser guided precision, absolutely perfect. You’d never see better.
Then we squandered it through inept finishing.

Merret in a good side would be unbelievably damaging. Whenever he is given space to kick/receive he surgically dissects the opposition. Would hate to see him delivering the ball to the Hawthorn forwards.
That’s also true and a good point. I just like it when the captain is “Him” I guess. Much like I wasn’t for Tallangatta Reserves and the White team in the Blitz Forum Footy match. ![]()
We did… Hobbs remember. The big-bodied mid we’d been waiting for…
Good title for a book! ![]()
Being “Him” is overrated. I kicked 10 on an u/17 match one week and claimed “Him” status. Next week the opposition were lining up for the first bounce and their captain says “don’t forget: every time the ■■■■ goes near the ball. HIM”.
They did not miss.
At that precise moment I thought “I absolutely wouldn’t begrudge him leaving”.
Merrett has ‘met with every f…ing club in the league’

Time On is your wrap up of all the footy finals gossip and banter.
Nathan Buckley has revealed he met with Essendon captain Zach Merrett “a few years back” when he was coach of Collingwood.
Merrett, who has controversially met with Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell in potentially seeking a trade, was a hot topic of discussion at the Norm Smith Grand Final Luncheon at Carousel on Thursday.
Buckley and James Hird gave differing views — the former saying “you’ve got to give yourself the best chance of success” and the latter suggesting “I’d be saying you’re going nowhere”.

Buckley said: “I think Essendon have a culpability and responsibility to the program, not just an elite program, but a consistent program and that’s not what’s happened over Zach Merrett’s period in the game. He’s probably had a look over the fence a couple of times.”
To that host Sam McClure said: “He met with you when you were Collingwood coach a few years back.”
Buckley was reluctant to discuss it but gave in.
“By the sounds of it he’s met with every f…ing club in the league,’’ he said to roars of laughter.
He continued: “It doesn’t make it exclusive … the generations were different. It was just the done thing you stick fat for good or for bad. I had seven months at Brisbane and I had opportunities. We weren’t that successful, I didn’t play in a final (at Collingwood) in my first eight years at the football club. As a player there’s a possibility you’re going to be faced with that, I don’t know whether the modern player is prepared to dig in through those periods for the club when they realise that their career is finite. You’ve got to give yourself the best chance of success.”
Onto coaching, Buckley said he would “100 per cent” take the Tasmanian job if it were offered while Hird said he would definitely not want to coach again.
So if Merrett has been meeting clubs since Buckley was coaching Why did he sign a long contract and why did he accept the captaincy?
Money
He needs to go but on our terms
What a ■■■■■■■.
Hope he never sets foot in the doors again.
second game v pies last season he was absolutely immense, my favourite game from him
Talking about Merrett as though he has had no input into how Essendon has been performing, and suddenly thinks “oh no it’s terrible” is shameful. He’s part of the problem. He doesn’t want to stay and fix the problem, that he has contributed to.
Making himself out as the victim is appalling.
What a disgrace. Be the change you want to see. This bloke has not made our club better. Just an individual performer and nothing more.
What did he say?
I don’t have an Age subscription so I only know what it says above “You sign a contract..you stay”
SUED
I hope he’s elsewhere next season. I never want to see him in red and black ever again. Don’t bury your heads in the sand Essendon. Move on with young players and let’s rebuild properly rather than continually pacify this ■■■■. ■■■■ him!
