I’m going to take a stab and I think Sam Draper was more of a spiritual leader at Essendon. And it’s been his exit which has rocked the club and it’s rocked Merrett.

If anyone is legitimately in thinking that Hawthorns offer was good they are losing their mind. It was absolutely terrible and I say this again, if you go and contact an opposition player who is in contract and is their generational player, get ready to get royally destroyed in a trade.
Merrett is an elite player. In a terrible Essendon era he would be considered top 20 in the AFL during that time. Speaks alot about him. His game would be even better if he had a competent coach + squad
