I don’t get to see too many acute spinal fractures at work (most end up at one of the metro hospitals then come back post-op or with a hard brace) but I assume him having surgery so quickly is a good sign there’s no concerns over spinal cord swelling etc (or at least the concerns were small enough that a surgeon was willing to go in there).
That being said, I did a quick lit review on pubmed and indications for fixation include unstable fractures and dislocations which doesn’t sound crash hot.

Also, plates are usually anterior. But I think if they needed stability it would be posterior with screws…

Fingers crossed

Yeah that sounds about right.
Though stable cervical fractures I’ve come across have tended to be managed non-operatively with an Aspen collar (or something of that ilk). No mention of a halo either so hopefully that means it wasn’t a burst or hangman fracture.

edit
A bit more digging suggests an anterior plate is used for decompression which means that clinically + MRI suggested there was a disc +/- ligament injury (presuming that’s what was done).

Not saying he did, but the classic bend down pick up almost driving head motion?

amazed selwoods not in a wheelchair

Sounds like he will get to walk out of hospital under his own steam, even though it may take a while. This is so much better news than the other end of the scale, which is Winders winding up in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Fingers crossed his situation continues to improve.

Phew…!

Where are you getting this from?

Surgery ‘going well’ doesn’t necessarily mean he is going to fully recover, it can just mean that they completed the procedure as planned.

An amputation surgery can ‘go really well’…just sayin

It’s a terrible, terrible thing. Such a fantastic player and all round decent human being. If there is a God, let him allow Jason to make a complete recovery.

such sad news, hopefully he’s ok and well mends as best he can.

the most surprising thing reading that though is he’s 39.
I know it’s not but it only seems like 5 or so years ago he left footy. was thinking he would be mid 40’s
