Not the many, many times he put his body on the line and we had our hearts in our mouths watching him back into a pack?
I agree he’s not the same player since coming back from injury, but that one instance does not define him.
Only as good as your last game🤷♂️
I still think he might get another contract at the end of 2021…due to:
- The chance that list sizes increase again…in which case I think there will be few delistees across the whole league, other than old age retirements.
- We go into the 2021 draft with one less pick.
Marty will be an Unrestricted Free Agent for life now…maybe someone else picks him up at the end of 2021.
Anyway, might as well hope that he can regain form in the absence of Saad/McKenna.
Guess guys like Jobe Watson and Matthew Lloyd were pretty average plodders then…
IF YOU LOVE HIM SO MUCH WHY DON’T YOU MARRY HIM
When gleeson gets to their level first then ill take back what I said. But I stand by what I said wheather people sook or not I could not care
Because 1 effort defines a player? (Whether it was a shirk or just the wrong choice is open to debate, but whatever)
Every single player has a contest where if it is slowed down and replayed over and over looks a bit average, but it only “defines” those for which people have pre conceptions about.
Blitz is cooked then
I’ve always been a supporter of Marty. For an experienced player and seeing that shows he jsnt the same and id rather we didn’t have him and picked up a rookie player to potentionally develop.
I tell you what if he could defend as much as blitzers defend him then he’d be a solid player
Hopefully he’s not best 18, but given they passed in the main draft I reckon it’s reasonable to suggest they didn’t rate the rest of the draft highly (with Moz as a LTI we can make 2 more picks if we want I think). And he seems a well liked member of the playing group. He hasn’t had a great run at it post injury, and may be finished, but I think the cost of keeping his was negligible, and we know that he has been able to play to a good standard in the past. Vs a complete unknown or someone we don’t rate, I think it as perfectly reasonable to keep him.
In 12 months we assess again, coming into hopefully a stronger draft and full list sizes. He may have proven himself a lock for the best 22, or he may be gone. But getting wound up about him being on the rookie list for 10 months is not worth it. And it’s not an indication of the club being cooked or anything else.
There’s a 50/50 split on blitz between posters who defend players and see the positive aspects and think “if we can just harness those positives player X will be good, and the team will be good” and those who go players and see the negative aspects and think “if we have players who are like player Y this club is cooked and will forever be”. Neither is ever completely right, life and footy are too nuanced, but blitz would be pretty quiet if there wasn’t this split.
bloke is extraordinarily lucky he had such a low trigger for a new contract (I digress but the bloke at the club who signed off on that cough Dodoro should come under scrutiny for that)
But read the tea leaves Marty. You are clearly on thin ice. And have one year left. So pull your finger out. I’m shocked that a guy in his position hasn’t rocked up to training to give himself the best chance. I know he doesnt have to. But neither do McGrath. Langford. Parish etc who have decided to commit. They are the leaders.
Perhaps there are mitigating circumstances for Gleeson as he awaited for the rookie draft. But next weeks will be telling as to how he reacts.
Surely he cant coast on winning training awards for being a good guy forever. LIFT
Actually, re-rookieing a player has a marginal effect on salary cap. Most of the saving of $80k is what you’d spend on the rookie anyway (plus you spend more on the ND draftee than a rookie draftee).
The reason it’s done is to open up senior list spots, which can then be used much earlier than the rookie draft spot you would otherwise have. You’re effectively moving the draft pick 40-50 spots earlier. Finally, I think to use the preseason supplemental rules/mid-season draft you need senior list spots open, not rookie spots.
I agree on the signalling. I’d add that its also a signal to the player.
Although this has now been changed for 2021.
And just to boot he might have also got 9 games and his sons are eligible as father-sons. Imagine if we hadn’t got Davey over the line!
I wasn’t talking about rookie costs, but responding to posts wanting Gleeson paid out.
Not savings by moving him to the Rookie list.
So you’re down Gleeson’s salary for the pay out plus the $80K minimum for a replacement rookie.
That’s a reasonable whack for one body on the list.
And there’s a cost in non-dollar terms in short numbering your list - training match ups & sims to give just one example. As we saw during the Hubs 12x12 matches are pretty dodgy.
Hmm, I slightly mis-read your post.
But the point is, people don’t move players to the rookie list for that reason. It would be cheaper to keep them on the main list if that was the only driver (as the new rookie is cheaper than the main list draftee).
The reason for doing it is to free up the spot and a little bit the signalling. But I suspect most of the signalling would happen even if they stayed on the main list via the manager and shopping the player around.
Rebranding as Martin from Marty for 2021

Martin not departin… yet Gleeson
Fuuuuuck Blitz. He’s on our list and if you don’t like it fuccccck ooooorrrrrffff. Give him a go or fuuuuuuckkkk Orrrrf. If he earns a game, good on him. If not, he can teach the new kids.
Really wish certain posters would bite the bullet and go off and support the filth or the scum. Would really miss them…!!! but sacrifices need to be made.
I’m expecting him to do a Mark Bolton and come back slightly over weight in his last preseason, when he saw the writing on the wall and concentrated on his outside footy endeavours.
I for one am very excited to attend the first MartyParty of 2021.
