#9 Dylan Shiel (Part 1)

It doesn’t but his surname doesn’t start with L.

You didn’t exactly qualify your point.

If you would like to provide some evidence I’m happy to discuss.

I didn’t say I wasn’t happy.

In fact I said I was happy it’s just that he will never be an elite player.

He’s a role player and there is nothing wrong with that.

First year at EFC not quite elite- second year elite. No problem.

That his kicking has improved from the start to the end of the year.

Disposal efficiency doesn’t show improvement over the year and doesnt isolate kicking only.

There is a kicking efficiency stat on the AFL app.

Yeah there’s always next year I guess

It has been proven in a few different threads that those stats are extremely misleading. Clangers are another one that can be misleading.

He’s signed for 6 years, no need to guess about next year.

It’s a lot easier to hit targets when they regularly get decent separation from their opponents.

We must be almost worst in the league at both getting separation ourselves AND allowing the opposition to get separation.

Shiel will look a million bucks when Heppell is firing in the middle, a decent ruck is getting us taps and stringer decides to handball for a change after breaking through a 3rd opposition tackle.

Role player huh

I suppose every player in the AFL is a “role player”.

Of course I forgot about that.

It’s curious how very good players are often critiqued on their shortcomings rather than what they bring to the table.

Shiel - if he was a beautiful kick of the football - he would actually be the best player in the competition and a generational talent. So okay - he’s not that, but he;s still farking great.

Another example is Walla. Sure he’s ‘inconsistent’ and ‘goes missing’. If he kicked 4 goals every week and laid 12 tackles a game he would once again be the best forward in the competition. Which he isn’t. But he’s really quite a damn good footballer.

If you can’t savour and enjoy the current output of Walla and Dylan Shiel without wishing they were perfect circles rather than a shapely elipse - well, you might have a hard time extracting enjoyment across many areas in life.

We are a much better team having Shiel than not having him or some unknown player(s) we may have drafted. The latter can just be speculative on who we’d have gotten and what difference they’d have made.

if we didnt get shiel we wouldnt be playing finals with our current injuries.

with a fit Daniher and smith as well could have been top 4.

Decent ruck who gets a tap out, we can only dream. We should throw a long term contract and $$ at Grundy.

From a short term perspective, Shiel has booked a finals game for the Dons in 2019.
Take him out of this list and you could reasonably argue we wouldn’t be playing in Perth with a first rounder in 2018.
With Shiel, more finals are likely to follow.
Is that worth more than 2 first rounders less a second rounder coming back?
