#9 Dylan Shiel (Part 1)

Spot on

The idea of my comment was not to point out shiels flaws, nor do I think he is no good, or anything like that. We are a better side with him, 100%

I’m not sure if my expectations were high, but if you talk 2 first round picks for a player, I suppose I expect, and I’m sure others do, an absolute A grade midfielder. I’m not sure shiel is quite at that level. Can he get there? Yes, he’s been All Australian. That’s the level I want him to be at. He wasn’t at that level this year, no where near it, imo. When you talk too mids in the comp, he’s not even really close to top 10. That’s what I hope he’s aspiring to become

This is what I mean by expectations. Shiel is 26 and has never been a top 10 mid and never will.

Zerret isn’t even there at present. And he has a far better body of work but lacks the wow factor of Shiel.

You could probably elaborate and say he cost EFC a pick 11 in 2018 and a likely pick 13 in 2019 less a likely second round pick at 33.

I hope so. If he can increase his disposals from mid-20s to closer to 30 it will make a huge difference.

If he wasn’t a top 10 mid when he made All Australian as a midfielder, what was he?

Tim Kelly just got named All Australian. Is he a better player than 10 of the below?

Dangerfield
Martin
Fyfe
J. Kelly
Cripps
Bontempelli
Neale
Pendlebury
Treloar
Merrett
Mitchell
Coniglio
Whitfield
Parker
Shuey
Gaff
Macrae
Walters
Yeo
Oliver

Forget defenders and forwards, just fill the AA side with all the midfielders on your list. I am sure we could find a couple more midfielders to make it 22.

He had a hell of a season, much better than a lot of those you mentioned, some of whom missed a big chunk of the season. Will finish high in the Brownlow.

Statistically Dylan Shiel has had a better year this year than any year at GWS. Just slightly ahead of 2016 - very similar stats though
2017 - All Australian year probably based on 2016 stats lol.

the only indicator he is worse on is goals kicked. 0.4 avg versus 0.6 and possibly due to kicking 9 behinds in a row first up. since then its been 9.6

Will be like Stringer this year and really come into his own and explode in his second year at the club.

yep - on year under his belt and him knowing his team mates they knowing him. All while a new game plan was being implemented. He and the team should be a lot more in synch and Dylan could well take it up a notch or two.

So basically you conceded my point by arguing a different point. Of course he has had a great season.

Also, Angus Brayshaw finished 3rd in the Brownlow last year…

Basically AA and Brownlow don’t mean ā– ā– ā– ā–  when considering who is in the best 10 mids, players etc

Brownlow will be interesting - mids

My guess
Shiel 13
Merrett 12
Heppell 9

Id say Merrett had better year, but Shiel might catch Umpires eyes more just.

Yes, he’s a better player than some of them players in my opinion.

I’m not too sure what your arguing though, I said he was a top 10 mid when he made All Australian. He clearly was. It’s the highest honour you can get as a midfielder. That’s the level I’m Hoping him to be around. Replicating that kind of season that he had at GWS

I bought that chair last week.

You might want to ask for a discount given it’s now a used chair.
Or are you expecting Dylan to be delivered with it like some sort of expensive accessory?

The million dollar sponsorship is paying off bigtime!

I don’t think that is correct. In his best year at gws he averaged closer to 30 disposals. This year he has averaged closer to 25.

I expect he is better in most categories this year compared to last though.

Shiel only needs to improve 10% next year, hell even 5% improvement to his numbers, coupled with a little more luck on the injury front thus resulting in 3 more wins, and watch how differently the competition view Zac and Dylan.

They will both be vying for AA selection.
Just a little more supply from the Rucks, and a forward line that functions, and they will look unstoppable.

It will happen.
