And Shiel also ranked 5th for clangers, 3rd for turnovers, & 26th in disposal efficiency. He’s great at getting the first kick from a clearance but not much good at hitting targets.
Stats are awesome but the midfield mix has not worked. I wonder how Parish’s numbers increase if he gets full time centre bounce time.
mcgrath down back then? it may become a real possibility - imagine adding dunkley, shiel, caldwell and a top 10 midfielder to the mix. we can’t fit em all in there
You’re making it a Parish v Shiel thing when it’s simply not.
Instead of “we can only have one”, how about we have two? They’re on the same team, we don’t need to pick one or the other.
Those two would be first picked and would easily be moving McGrath out before them (back or wing).
Btw, Parish is currently ranked top 5 for average turnovers and clangers per game for us. His kicking efficiency is bottom FEW in the entire AFL for midfielders prior to this season.
If you’re running the line that Shiel in the side = Parish doesn’t play centre square, then Parish’s last 4 weeks he’s avg 3.25 centre clearances a game.
First two weeks (Shiel and Caldwell in) he avg a still pretty healthy 2.5 a game. So it’s made a difference, but not night and day.
It’s Parish’s numbers around the ground that have really changed - avg 17 disposals (11 contested / 7.5 uncontested) in the first two weeks vs 31.75 (13.25 contested / 18.25 uncontested) in the last four
Nah, just using stats like you did to show that whilst Shiel is great at getting first kick from a clearance, he’s a poor user of the ball. Shiel has been worse performing than Parish has been in every disposal efficiency/turnover/clanger stat besides this year, the year Shiel hasn’t played. And Parish is far younger and has far more upscope.
Shiel will be 29 next year when he returns.
Parish is young enough to trend towards the best in the comp and continue improving. McGrath could do the same. I have not seen us any worse with Shiel out of the side. I’ve only seen improvement from our kids.
And yes, it very much is a Parish vs Shiel because we’ve seen what happens when Shiel is in the side. Parish goes to a flank and Shiel gets priority.
The whole premise of what I am saying is that they can both play in the same midfield, you get that right? There is no Shiel vs Parish debate. They are literally on the same team, we have both, it’s ok. We don’t need to make a choice, we can move other players.
The whole “been worse performing except for this season” is just false though and quickly and easily checked? In 2020 Shiel had better disposal efficiency and less clangers. 2019 Shiel was down in those yet averaged a heap more of the ball. So two out of 3 years he has been more efficient while also getting more contested possessions, tackles, metres gained and score involvements? I don’t even think he’s an efficient player but it’s not Darcy’s strength either.
Again, I wouldn’t be moving Darcy out of the midfield either. They compliment each other and Shiel will actually help Darcy in games like Brisbane where he was slaughtered and could barely touch the ball until the game was over. We need multiple blokes able to win clearances, not one.
I like Dylan but I am close to agreeing. Where does he go.
We brought in Caldwell. Along side Draper and Parish you would say. McGrath Merrett and Cox making up the middle 6.
With Perkins, Stringer, Langford, Walla and the Meatball all taking turns through the middle.
You look at Half forward there’s no room there, if the above aren’t on the bench they are forwards.
The only spot I see is half back taking Heppell‘s spot on the list but him being captain it’s not going to happen. Or we drop Langford for him.
