Adrian Dodoro - Flankers into Mids since 2000 (Part 2)

Because Sydney have some of the best list management in the league (helped substantially by academy and zoning selections) - if that’s a standard you think we should try and hit, 100% fine with me, but it’s not very realistic

You don’t think we should try to be the best list management team? What?

Man I hate this Sydney Academy argument that’s always posted on Blitz. Essendon is big Melbourne club who can attract players much easier than other clubs. We have privileges too.

sounds like essendon goggles to me

You don’t think big Victorian clubs can attract (and retain) players easier than smaller or interstate clubs?

Only compared to saints, dogs and north. We have no advantage compared to pies, blues, hawks and tigers.

And Sydney don’t their academy advantage compared to GWS and GC

Some clubs have academies that give them advantages, other clubs can attract players easier because they are a big club

Saying Kinnear Beatson is only lucky because he has his academies but not acknowledging that Essendon is lucky is just silly

Those academy picks are just about freebies, if a big club wants to attract players they usually have to pay overs like Beams, Shiel, Hooper and Taranto.

Give up 2 first where swans get to use their first rd and then use points for academy kids

I can only think of one example where Sydney was able to use their first before matching a bid on another first round academy player. That was in 2020.

I agree that the bidding system is flawed.

Maybe in 2001.

Not now.

-citation needed-

Being able to play in Anzac Day and Dreamtime, as well as having rich and powerful backers who can offer career opportunities past football definitely allows us to attract players, regardless of how bad we have been

Pick 9 and a future first. If that reporting is accurate, it was a big miss.

That’s true. But if you take out their academy picks they have had their fair share of misses as well as hit compared to most other clubs. So I don’t think the swans recruiters are heaps better than other clubs

Some recent top end busts - Matt Ling pick 14, Gould pick 28, Stephens at pick 3 is solid but not elite.

They have nailed picks in the 30s and 40s in Warner, Rowbottom and McInerney and McCartin

This is my point. Taken as gospel when really who knows what picks were going back and forth.

Do we have reason not to believe it?

Swans never had pick 9. Blues had it and that was reliant on if Papley was traded. It was never as simple as rejected 2 first round picks for Joe

Yeah, it is in the media so it will not be true, it will be the sanitised, made to look good truth, not the actual truth.

I think it’s fairly safe to say that had we traded him in 2019 when he wanted out rather than holding him to his contract and getting 1 pick a year later, we would have been able to attain a better deal.

The 2 picks rejected for JD is just another erroneous attempt at re-writing history to push certain agendas- just like the ‘2 first round picks’ for Shiel transaction. Just leave out the bits we don’t need.
