AFL - Terrible Ideas, Too Many Ideas, No Idea…

I’d say that in the past this would have ■■■■■■ me off, but I’m certainly wondering if me knowing a players weight actually makes any difference to me whatsoever.

I get commentators being angry about it, they have one less thing to talk about, but realistically I think player weights fall into the catergory of ‘want to know’ rather than ‘need to know’.

In short, I don’t care enough.

But heaps of things could go into the ‘want to know’ category rather than ‘need to know’ category. It’s basic human nature to want to know what an athletes height and weight are. This is simply a case of the AFLW does it coz women don’t like talking about their weight and now suddenly men should be the same.

Yeah, but I guess the issue becomes when a persons ‘want to know’ intrudes on another persons right to not divulge.

There is no doubt the world isn’t what it was, but that isn’t going to change.

On the question of height, I don’t think I’d care about that either. Height differentials are pretty obvious to see anyway.

I know you said earlier about possession counts etc, I doubt that will ever happen because it is so visible on the screen and can have much more of a direct correlation to the outcome of a game.

It likely is as a result of AFLW impacting AFL, but I’m not sure that really matters anyway.

I just think, in the end, this is one of those things that you step back from and ask yourself ‘why am I actually that angry about this?’

I’ve changed my views on this. Why not a live weigh in of every player of every club? Like a really long draft / biggest loser event?

Listed heights are often lies (e.g. Jobe was 194 before we realised he was a midfielder).

Weight would fluctuate more than height, but not sure if there is more lying about it.

It’s actually more of an issue at lower levels, where it’s already much harder to find out the size/nature of your opponents.

He prefers Two Litre Peter.

Not clear if volumes will be banned as well.

Boxing should be banned coz they get weighed on screen. Shame on them. The biggest guy should be able to fight the smallest.

I don’t trust the player weights coz they don’t update often. Maybe a few times in a career. The Essendon website can’t even put player photos up so I doubt they pay much attention to the player profiles. Jaiden Hunter has been on the list for 7.5 months and still doesn’t have a mugshot.

Ok. If we are throwing out things that are completely unrelated to the discussion.

Golfers should publish player weights, cos I just want to know. How heavy was John Daly? I have a right to know dammit (and by ‘right’ I mean self-given)

Next they’ll start banning strawmen!

I think they should replace the weight figure with whether they follow other clubs on Twitter, Insta and Facebook.
Would help commentators talking rubbish instead of actually…
You know…
The commentating the game…

Its a professional sport (apparently) and height and weight should not be an issue to published. Seriously snowflake central. Is there legitamitely a player who gives a toss? If so, how embarrassing for them. If its a player who wrestles with their body image and every time they step on the scales, or read the record, they get into a panic, then see a shrink and consider a new job. And during draft, height/weight ratio important as paints a picture as to their physically development entering system for us fans to gain some insight. What, they think we see 100kg next to a name we going to shame them? No one cares. If they come back from off season looking like they enjoyed the all you can eat buffet on the cruise ship a bit too much, then they might, as a result of their proffession, attract the odd picture and comment, albeit media and/or supporters. Just coz someone has an idea whilst holding hands singing Kumbaya to each other with crayons in hand does not mean it has to come to fruition. Where does this crap come from? Beam me up Scotty… please!

So the players shouldn’t care.

Why is it so important to you? And with that, why is it more important that you know than it is to them that it is private?

My goodness what a joke this is. Professional athletes ffs.

I just told you, im a fan of a proffesional sport so height/weight ratio is an important measure of the size of a player. Just their size. Ill spell it out… plsaers profile reads 200cm, weighs 100kg, ok, big solid unit, sounds good. 200cm weighs 80kg, a way to go. How on earth is that an issue?

It isn’t. I get that you just want to know.

But it doesn’t actually impact on anything, apart from you knowing. It doesn’t actually change the need for a player to add or lose weight, or add strength or endurance. All of that becomes apparent in the outcomes.

I mean just on this forum we get players copping it for being sticks, or overweight or complimented with absolutely zero mention of their actual weight. In fact those comments are based on photos alone, with the actual figures being pretty quickly dismissed. Cox is 94kg? ‘Nah he is a stick’. Stringer is 92kg? ‘Nah he is fat’.

Clubs will still be very aware of the physical development a player needs, and have access to the figures.

I just don’t get why people would be so angry about this. It is something so minor to us as supporters. It actually has no bearing.

everythings fixed then, well done AFL
