AFL - Terrible Ideas, Too Many Ideas, No Idea…

It could be. It depends on what growth was in previous years.

I miss the good ol’ days of 2020-2021 when, for just a short while, the general populace understood what “exponential growth” meant…

After the departure of Dean Rioli from the Board, what’s become of the Indigenous support system adopted in implementation of the external review recommendations?

You know Australian football community club participation is only like 3k behind rugby league in both nsw and qld now.

Thats good but how much of that is rugby league falling.

And what happens if you throw in rugby union with league?

Union is about 1/3rd Aussie rules participation up there.

Yeah so a lotta kids arent playing both, but if you were really good you can switch codes pretty easy.

Private schooled? You play Rugby not league.

(But your private school will now more and more have a aussie rules team)

Yep agree on all that.

They’d also have decent numbers for touch rugby. I’m talking the proper versions of the sports there are now practically the same.

The afl don’t include auskick and the schools cup in those numbers either. I assume the other sports don’t include schools cups either, but auskick is much bigger than their rugby equivalents in nsw and qld.

oh they absolutely do

afl don’t factor in unique participants in their data collection. so if you’re a kid who does auskick, school footy and club footy, then you are counted as three

hell, if you get hit in the head by a footy while walking your dog at the park then they’ll count you a fourth time

Interesting i heard Rob auld the head of development at the afl say just in the past fortnight they don’t count non registered participants and are strict on who they do count. I dunno if this includes auskick, is that something kids register for? Anyway it should be included imo.

Also i don’t think you can do auskick and club footy at the same time coz auskick only goes up to 8 years old, junior footy starts at under 10s and school footy i don’t think they’d be registered for that. Anyway i don’t exactly know as haven’t been involved for years, but just interpreting what he’s saying.

About the 5 min mark.

well yeah of course that’s what he says. but when your on-the-ground staff are incentivised based on participation numbers in their area…

(every sport does this btw)

You’re confusing the two things. While club memberships are up 10% the general interest in Aussie rules in the northern states is growing exponentially. They are two different points that Dillon was referring to.

I dont think attendence for swans games have increased dramatically.

And theres still seagulls outnumbering Giants fans at games.

But i do like em and will go watch Jakey snag a few next year i think

You can do Auskick up until 12 years of age and absolutely can do junior club footy at the same time. Must register for both, which the AFL tracks through PlayHQ.

Clubs get the data as Auskickers receive a junior membership, which they count seperately to an existing membership.

Double ups everywhere!

Not 100% sure on school footy, but I think they have their own system. They probably share the participation figures with the AFL anyway, but maybe not all personal data.

Why would someone do auskick and junior footy at the same time? Doesn’t make sense, a handful at best you’d think.

@handypoint the swans are the hottest ticket in town, my mate up there cancelled his scg membership coz 3x last year he went with his son and couldn’t get a seat, plus they average 40k which is about double of the next biggest sports club in Sydney. They need a bigger stadium, similar to the lions. The giants are small but have more genuine footy fans in their group i think. I agree they’re a likeable club too I’ll enjoy watching Jake there without the frustration of him playing for us.

Sydney Swans are full, i agree. The SCG should be a much bigger stadium.

The giants do get a few fans from the tablelands where aussie rules is in the blood its true.

Sydney is definetly there for the taking

No. That’s wrong. It has nothing to do with previous years. 10% is only exponential growth if the exponent is 0.04, ie 10^0.04 = 1.1

Where are the tablelands where you say footy is popular?

A couple of bad seasons and those theatre going f-wits will all abandon ship, wont be a good look when its 3 quarters empty

The swans have averaged 33-35k per game for the past 20 years.

The stadium only holds 48k max and they usually sell out of reserved seat memberships.

I think total they have 75k club members?

They average bigger crowds in a smaller stadium than Melbourne or StKilda.
