just never got the impression the movie was about the sport, which is what i would want from a sports movie

Well how about Gentleman Jim, (1942) with Errol Flynn, the story of Gentleman Jim Corbett, first of the modern heavyweight boxing champs.

FWIW - Raging Bull is excellent as a sports movie. When We Were Kings is the best sports doco l have ever seen.

Remember the Titans is my favourite.
We are Marshall was great as well.
I liked the Longest Yard (with Adam Sandler) as well.
Varsity Blues for memory was okay.

For something different I really liked The Wrestler.

For comedic value Caddyshack & Dodgeball.
