we didn’t. comm games federation approached the vic govt.
cgf tried on the same sht that ioc/fifa/etc always do in that they added a whole bunch of “oh by the way you’ll need this as well” that they do in the assumption that host cities won’t back down.
vic govt instead has said “you know what, you approached us, so go fk yourselves”
So all the infrastructure projects are set to continue which begs the questions:
will those budgets not blow out?
is the increase in games costings from 2.6 billion to 7 billion all down to the cost of running the events - ie. security costs? Doesn’t add up for me.
Comm games is a nightmare in costs and actually isn’t worth nearly enough in return. This is a great decision. Let someone else host it and go bankrupt.
I think the plan was to demolish some of the projects after the games. They were going to build a swimming pool in Geelong then demolish it (happy to to stood correct on that).
Massive waste just for a few games of sport.
yeah they’ll probably blow out. but it still results in something that exists that people can attend/use.
and yeah when you have 4,000 skeletons in suits coming in from cyprus and gibralter and st vincents grenadines demanding to get about the place in audi q8s instead of kia picantos then the bill keeps going up
There was a story about this, I knew I had some recollection about it:
Commonwealth Games 2026: Geelong temporary pools to become community centre. Two world-class swimming pools set to be built for the Commonwealth Games will be ripped out and replaced once the 2026 event is over . There are plans for a purpose-built aquatics facility to be built in Armstrong Creek.
Dan in his PC said they will still spend $2 billion building the regional sporting facilities (why?) and then another $1 billion on regional housing and the cost of running the games itself was an extra $4.5 billion on top of that
Some serious BS on that $4.5 billion figure I’d say
Now that’s funny.
Cancelling a sporting event no one cares about and no one apart from the Commonwealth knows about isnt a global embarrassment nor is it monumental.
All the other cities around the world who were queuing up to host these games will be rubbing their hands in glee at the opportunity that has now presented itself.
