ANNOUNCE FEWER OLYMPICS/PARALYMPICS/COMM GAMES

Google says CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee from 2005-2014, started his working life as an ALP staffer to Neville Wran and a mate of Richo

As one of the old guard 1980s NSW ALP Right no love for Andrews I would guess

Kind of ironic that cancelling the games has created more comment and interest in the games than actually holding the games.

All Australian states have ruled out taking on the 2026 games, I suppose that makes all of Australia treasonous.

cgf wants an “athlete village”, refuses to let cities use hotels etc. nowhere within cooee of the cbd to build one.

The ALP holds 5 seats around Geelong, 2 in Ballarat and 2 in Bendigo. That is a fair chunk of the reason why they hold government.

Moving the games to the city is a massive vote loser for the government in these regional seats. Cancelling the games is a safer political strategy.

I blame Meghan Markle.

it’s probably also worth noting that the cgf did this to themselves

they pulled the 2022 games from durban because sth africa didn’t want to foot the bill for every man and his dog’s junkets, so birmingham was brought forward from 2026 to 2022. they then proudly said they would award 2026 and 2030 both together at a fancy event in rwanda (i think), but then had to cancel that because no one bid for either event.

they then panicked and went back through their contacts list. durban said fk off. india, gold coast, canada, malaysia all left them on seen. vic govt was the only one to reply.

everyone’s done paying for pissant federations’s gravy trains.

-edit- france recently did the same thing for the 2025 rugby league world cup

Wonder what the costings would’ve been had the event been staged in metro melbourne, like we did in 2006.

I’d be guessing a lot of cash would’ve been saved seeing as we already have the bulk of the infrastructure in place

From a local perspective (Geelong) there was initial excitement following announcement with the hope of the games bringing high end facilities to the region. Unfortunately with announcements of a temp swimming arena as opposed to new community facilities, construction of a cheaply built games village which was to be used as possible public housing post event and constant squabbles regarding facility locations and their longevity post games it all really started to go down hill from there!

I’d prefer Melb to host. Why wouldn’t you? Basically ready to go minus a few upgrades to some major stadiums with some already approved and budgeted (MCG) . Most Geelong residents are brought up heading to Melb for major sporting events! Its what we have always done!

I’m not sure many locally would be overly upset, I have certainly had the conversation today and the general consensus was very meh!

What I do feel sorry for are the hundreds if not thousands of people that have left their jobs and recently taken on 4 year Commonwealth game specific employment contracts to set up and plan for the event.

Will this free up seating for The Hanger?

I guess in the modern age of internet streaming, a lot of the niche events get televised anyway and with each sport having their own annual world championship having a specialised invite only olympics is redundant.
