Ts & Ps.

Good person with a gun, now’s not the time, don’t politicise this, constitutional rights, etc.

Surely that’s to be expected when attending an antique village and flea market??

Ah well.

i am currently in Cairo for a conference, the UK government travel advice was upgraded last week to Do not travel to any part of Egypt. Meanwhile the last update for travel to the USA on 30th Oct was the removal of the warning about an active shooter, looks like they will need to update again.

FFS the US is not a safe place to travel

Yeah, if ya come back from any USA travels intact, you’ve likely dodged a bullet.

Too early for our thoughts and prayers

Most are still sending thoughts and prayers for the last one

I’m in the States right now and the first I’ve heard about that shooting is in this thread.

Guess it’s just BAU for them here :woman_facepalming:t2::woman_shrugging:t2:

I am in Egypt at a conference, was speaking to a lady (mid sixties) attending about gun control and how in Australia you need a legitimate reason to have a gun. Her reply was can you get a gun to protect yourself? Country is screwed.

Why don’t they get, “protect yourself from what when people have no guns”, I like my chances against a knife or hand weapon any day opposed to a gun

There is no conceivable way to ever make that true in the US.

I know of a few people who refused to hand in firearms during the Aus buyback, but by and large most Australian gun owners complied with the semi auto laws. That simply won’t happen in the US. Very, very different outlook. A large percentage of the population will remain armed no matter what.

I’d hate to live there on balance. I’d be permanently paranoid that everyone else is carrying a handgun in a society that is riven with tension on political, religious and racial lines.

Yes but taking it away from the general public, has known even fielding a firearm in general public an alert, I know people who have buried there old firearms and maybe they will stay that way.

I remember back in 1988, my friend had to take his 22 back to the gun shop to get recalibrated. So we walked it down town, he said the ■■■■ was gone or some something so it was ok, next thing we had police cars all around us and drop the weapon, sirens, quite scary

Can you imagine suggesting a buyback over there, you’d permanently solidify the everpresent fear rhetoric that the US government wants to take everyone’s guns and convert the joint to an authoritarian police state or something

Country is beyond cooked

Yep, they’d view it as the very reason that the 2nd Amendment was created. A bizarre nation all round.

Other countries are taking notice

Gun violence has surpassed car accidents as the leading cause of death for people ages 1 to 19 - Poynter In USA

In the United States, the road traffic death rate stood at 10.6 highway deaths per 100,000 people annually while Canada has a traffic death rate of 6.0 per 100,000 people. While much worse than European norms, these did not even approach those of the world’s highest rates, where annual traffic deaths in excess of 30 occurrences per 100,000 people are registered. Thailand has the highest death rate at 36.2, with Malawi following closely behind with 35.0 deaths per 100,000 people. Many of the victims are often cyclists or pedestrians, who are using the same highways and byways as motor vehicles are. Increased recognition of non-motorists’ rights on the road may therefore go a long way in reducing highway fatalities worldwide, as will better drivers’ education initiatives and more stringently enforced vehicle safety regulations

What this guy said.
