Apple's Latest

Well that’s a bit ridiculous, you don’t see people walking down the street using a laptop/iPad or watching a TV

I mean if you happen to be watching a game alone or with blitz then this apple vision thingo would be pretty cool.

Id have the VR background a packed MCG, the game on a big screen and blitz matchday thread on a seperate screen in my vision next to me.

Also no remotes to break any screens anyway.

I also really rate apples instant voice to text on voicemail.

That new feature for phones looks very useful.

Telstra has done that for years.

Yeah it just appears as people speak on your lockscreen. So if it’s something important you can pickup mid voice message and speak to the person.

More efficient screening

Uses instant voice to text

What i find interesting about the vision plus, if its being billed as the next big thing in computing wont it eat into their sales of all their other devices?

I mean wont people put off updating their laptop and mac for example if wearing this vision plus thing gives you excellent computing power, multiple virtual high res displays?

Especially if thats what it intends to replace?

I think the launch 6-8 months plus ahead of general release is more about dissuading people to jump into competitors VR/AR environments than the tech.

Looking at the apple spiel on it , it sounds as of the device were available today it would instantly work was a desktop replacement computer?

Or am i missing something in their pitch?

Like contrast it to say sony releasing the new playstation. They release it with a handful of games at launch. They dont say. “Heres our new playstation now buy it in 8 months”.
(Ok chip shortages aside they didnt do this)

a guess regarding release time is that it will allow developers to work more readily with Apple on apps and products for the device. There’s no more secrets around it so everyone can plan stuff for its launch.

So come release date there’ll be a good suite of apps and content and add ons ready to use with it.

Good for device sales and for those who want to offer vision pro stuff like Disney, sports platforms (?) etc.

As for replacing computers - who knows where the tech will go - but as we’ve seen with tablets and smart phones and laptops vs desktops they all have distinct advantages and disadvantages relative to each depending on the user’s needs and preference.

i think as a consumption device it’s easy to see how it’ll be excellent in that space. As a creating content device, that’s less clear how easy it’ll be compared to computers/tablets etc. Very interesting to see it evolve as people actually use it.

Apple have said they have been working on this thing for years.

Beggars belief they havent got their full suite of apps working, made a few extra themselves.

I think its an announcement to support the shareprice whilst the US economy hopefully recovers.

Lot of dough to spend on a new gadget. Many will spend it tho.

If the M2 chip on board doesnt offer enough compute the headset can be plugged into your mac.

And given its AR using a physical key board and mouse is easy. Just provides ump teen virtual screens and as per their media release its new OS can run multiple apps at once.

As seen with their phone, tablet etc - the heavy lifting for apps comes from external companies and the $$ cut they get from the app store.

hold for me / call assistant is GOAT - watch it be copied in the next gen iphone

open source: here’s this cool novel feature
apple: here’s this cool novel feature with a new hat

Yep theres always a bit of catchup on OS to android.

Well from the advertising spiel

what if you could throw out all your computer monitors?

Go on a flight and out yourself in a theatre instead to watch a movie.

Maybe walk into an empty room and place all your furniture in it before moving in?

Have a 3D conversation with a family member whose 1000km away, popping them on the couch next to you?
(Or a attend a lecture/music concert etc virtually)

How good it will be will dependent on how good the applications will be for it and its hardware

SO has mentioned she’d like an Apple Watch.

Does anyone have them and are they worth it?

The main issues I see with people wearing them:

  • phone calls/ texts interrupt you wherever you are
  • battery life is pox
  • you probably need it hooked up to your mobile provider to get the real value.
  • way more options than there used to be.

Pros

  • can use it while exercising and working out with music on (phone is a bit clunky for running)
  • can track some fitness goals

I have one and wear it all day, every day.

Definitely great for working out and I use it to track my heart rate and how many calories I am burning and to tick off daily goals. I think it’s great for quickly glancing at messages, scores and the temperature, weather, date, time etc.

I don’t really understand what you mean that calls interrupt you?

The battery life is not really much of an issue, I just charge it while I sleep and then it lasts the whole day. I also never use my watch if I don’t have my phone on me, so I have no need for the cellular version at all.

I really like the Apple Watch. I can leave my phone and wallet behind in a number of situations. I can just wander down to the cafe while listening to a podcast, read my book once there, and I am still reachable if I really need to be, and I can pay with it. The phone is always on silent now when I do have it, and I just have it notify me through the watch. If something hits my bank account I know about it, which is a feature I like.
