Appliance Buying Guide: What's good and stuff

I had a go of them at an Airbnb. Was ■■■■■, and you seem to be locked into their ‘ecosystem’

So, I want to upgrade some gear. I usually just run 3.1 cause the room is small, and nowhere to put rears.

At first I was going to just go wireless, but the guy at the store cracked it.

Currently have a Yamaha, Krix Lyrix gold fronts, Krix centre.

Think I can budget 2-4K for 3.1.

Any brands I should listen to?

Right so the Yamaha is the receiver?

And you already have LCR speakers?

What is the sub?

The fastest path to an upgrade is working out what the weakest link is.

No sub yet.

I am upgrading and sending stuff to the granny flat.

I am looking at either a Krix sub to match what I have, or want to check out the Chinese brand Tonewinner. Gets good reviews, and I think worth a listen.

I have a Tonewinner.

Very very good bang for your buck in Australia. Hard to beat.

No need to brand match with subs to mains.

That kind of timbre matching is important as you pan between main speajers.

If you don’t have a sub, then getting a decent one and crossing over all your mains at 80Hz in the receiver is the thing to do first imo.

That should be a good uplift.

What tonewinner do you have? And can you recommend a couple of fronts, or a brand to match with?

Edit:

Surprised that the Chinese haven’t really taken over the speaker market. I mean, everything is probably made there, or parts made there anyway.

I’ve got the SW-D8000.

The thing is the size of a fridge.

I’d have to think about speakers because that depends on numerous factors.

But based on what you’ve described and thinking about “what’s really going to make a difference”, then a good sub (or 2) is the choice.

How old is your receiver? What model Yamaha?

Traditionally, it’s about this time that someone says “You two should get a room”.

Yeah, but what a good sounding room it’s going to be!

Would be crowded, just with the subs the size of fridges.

FWIW I have an Adelaide Design 1225STL but it is only as big as an esky.

So its a reasonable receiver, and new enough. To improve here is expensive. Taking the load off it by having the sub do the low frequencies will help.

I need to look up your speakers.

Without putting much thought in I rate the Kef Q series.

They are a decent price, and that concentric driver makes for great imaging and off-axis listening. You get real wins with the matching centre because that design avoids a lot of the pitfalls of 2 way centres.

KEF have been great for many decades

The Kefs are currently reduced on Amazon for their annual capitalist event too.

Different beasts to the current topic, but I recently got a pair of Edifier active monitors for my lad who loves a bit of beat production.

Absolutely blew me away for clarity, particularly in the mids where a bunch of the cheap brands really fall down.

These things were $149 and for a near-field application I’d be amazed if anything on the market would beat them based on value proposition

There is that, indeed.
