At the movies - From the couch

You’re all over the place.

Think of a point and stick to it.

I’m done anyway.

Thank god.

That’s your point?

Your point is that we won’t get to see a time when three all time greats are playing at the same time?

So then you’re saying that there was a brief time in the early 1970s where Cinema peaked and that we will never see such a time again.

Wow…good point (insert sarcastica font)

No…

The quality of cinema was much better through the 70s, 80s & 90s

There were many occasions when 2-3 great films were nominated at the same time, during those decades.

It’s pretty simple… And now I bid you adieu.

Show me the details where this happened

There are good movies being made, just not great, lasting ones.
I challenge anyone to name a recent movie that tells its particular story more artfully, skilfully and with as great an insight as those of yesteryear.
And as for the recent Blade Runner, what about the original necessitated a sequel? It was a perfect standalone film with an enigmatic and unique tone and style.
2049 came across as a bit of a fashion show, with well designed set pieces, but a clunky plot and forgettable characterisations.

It’s called google sweetheart. Bye bye.

1975 - Chinatown, The Conversation, Godfather 2
1976 - jaws, Barry Lyndon, one flew over the cuckoo’s nest, Nashville, dog day afternoon

Found these two successive years in 30 seconds of research. Need I go on?

Yeah…keep going…two years is not “many occasions”

Spotlight

73, 74 and 77 all good too

Isn’t Suacy 30? Not sure he can provide contrast to what was playing in the cinema in the 70’s and 80’s.

I disagree that there are not great movies being made (hint, there are) but we’re not going to know what’s determined as a ‘great lasting movie’ made now until enough time has passed to determine it as such. Heaps of ■■■■ was made back in the 70s too but we don’t remember them and the great films and directors grow with stature over time.

I don’t quite get the issue with Blade Runner 2049. I love the first Blade Runner, it might be my favourite film. But its a mood piece, its just film noir atmosphere and score and only really comes alive when Rutger Haurer is allowed to ad-lib and ham it up, and the plot is almost non-existent, i’d say the sequel not only has a better plot (in having one at all) but also as a result strengthens the original and makes me like it more. Equally in the sequel the production is just beautiful (though the score isn’t a patch on Vangelis’s master work) and Ford actually turns up and gives a ■■■■ for the first time in decades. It bombed, but like the original will only gain appreciation over time. It didn’t need a sequel, but I feel very fortunate we got one.

Given the discussion around Blade Runner, this is a very relevant post.

The original failed at the box office but later became a cult classic.

Who knows what recent movie(s) will take the same path in the future?
