Saw The Odyssey. Very enjoyable. Probably one of the most technically impressive films I’ve seen. Ssome amazing performances, and all strong. Nolan did an amazing job pulling the story into a coherent, strong narrative in three hours.
All that said, although I definitely enjoyed it I wouldn’t say it’s anywhere near his best film just from an enjoyment perspective. It was never tedious yet most scenes weren’t gripping. I will say the last 20 minutes were absolutely gripping and packed a huge emotional punch.
Holland, Patterson and Hathaway in particular should all be nominated for Oscar’s. Amazing performances.
Also saw ‘Tuner’. About a piano tuner who has a heightened sense of hearing (causing serious issues with many noises - he has to wear ear plugs most of the time when going about everyday life, often with headphones as well). He discovers he also has a talent for cracking safes, and he ends up falling in with a shady crowd.
Dustin Hoffman plays the role of his older mentor.
Was a bit darker than I was expecting, but very enjoyable. The piano playing is fantastic.
It’s technically super-impressive. There’s a lot to like about it. Obviously the story is old, but the film-making is old, too. In a good way. Shot on location. ‘A cast of thousands’…maybe literally.
Is it great?
It’s better than Tenet but Bodies Bodies Bodies is better than Tenet. It’s better than Oppenheimer.
I can’t be having with Hathaway’s performance. Pattinson…I mean…yeah….he’s a bit muggy but I’m not sure that’s entirely on him.
Damon, yes. Legiuzamo, yes. And he should be used in way more stuff.
It’s a bit Titanic, in a way. Incredible spectacle. No arguments there.
It’s definitely awesome that films like this can be made, epics on a grand scale. Absolute cinema. But a great film? It’s very good.
I do have one question as someone unfamiliar with the text.
Pattinson reciting all of the weapons coming down the hole…is that some sort…literary joke? Because if it’s not then it’s reeeeeeally Farking dumb. As if he wasn’t enough of a mugging villain….
Edit: and this doesn’t need a spoiler because it’s been discussed…but mum and dad rather than mother and father does jar. It seems obstinate.
Edit: Also…I feel like we should be thankful we were spared a full frontal of Cyclops. I can’t help but imagine it though….

I need someone to explain: Shields, spears, friggin’…everything narration that we can not only see but is extremely drawn out. It was giving Terence Hill/Bud Spencer. Surely there was something clever going on that I’m just not learned enough to understand?
The reason Pattinson kept yelling them out, was because everyone was so concerned with fighting Damon or not wanting to fight him, none of them realised all the weapons that were being dropped down. Plus it showed what a coward Pattinson character was that he was yelling out the weapons and getting everyone else to use them when he was too gutless to pick one up and try to kill him himself
Superb telling of the rivalry and intertwined lives of Mary Queen of Scots’s two central figures: Mary Stuart and Elizabeth I with Saoirse Ronan as Mary and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I.
Strong performances by both the leading actresses and a great supporting cast.
Visually stunning movie with beautiful Scottish landscapes and a thumping soundtrack by Max Richter.

Well, @wimmera1 , for once I agree with pretty much all of what you say. Except that it’s better than Oppenheimer. I thought Oppenheimer was better. I can’t say anything about Tenet because I haven’t seen it.
It actually reminded me most of all of ancient movies like Journey to the Centre of the Earth and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: a straight adventure story with fantastical sights and effects, but really nothing more than that. And the Mom and Dad stuff was just ridiculous and did not fit at all with the rest of the dialogue.
There was quite an interesting take on the story at the end where Od is reflecting on the nature of what they did with the horse.
And speaking of the horse, why they went with that particular design of horse is beyond me. Just made it difficult for themselves.
I’d give it 8. But then I’m not especially a Nolan fan.
I see that Jack Lowden (River Cartwright in Slow Horses) has new gigs as the next Mr Darcy in Pride and Prejudice and as Bernie Gunther in the Philip Kerr series coming up from where Bernie is a homicide detective in pre-Nazi Berlin and as a non-Nazi detective under the likes of Reynhard Heydrich during the war. He has a lot of roles after the war. Trying to remember when he works as the house detective at the Adlon Hotel next to the Brandenburg Gate in Unter den Linden. The hotel is often shown in videos of a bombed out Berlin after the war.
The new P & P is going to cause some angst with a number of non-white characters as Mr Bingley and Mrs Gardiner. In 1810? Mrs Gardiner was played by Joanna Davis in the 1995 series, the actual mother of Emilia Fox as a teenaged Georgiana Darcy.
